My ILs aren't road trippers. I would absolutely let them go with any of my siblings/SIL and their families/kids. My sister in I have talked about doing "kid swap" for a week each in the summer.. she has twins that are 8 months older than DS1, she lives in Cali and we're in MD. I would even let them go as young tots. I want my kids to experience as much of the world as they can. My previous nanny kids do this with their grandma and I think it is wonderful. I think they started when they youngest was 5 or 6 years old. They would pick an area and road trip to all the national parks + fun site seeing adventures for a month. I remember one year they went someone that had zip lining! I used to go visit each set of grandparents for a week at a time starting around that age. If they want to travel instead, more power to them. My grandparents have a cottage on a lake up north, and every year they'd have all the grandkids (at the time there were 6 of us) up there for a week. It was awesome and a totally great bonding experience. As long as you trust the grandparents I'd be all for it. Looking back at it, there were a few things that probably would've made my parents nervous about it, but my grandma set pretty strict rules as we stuck to them (and there were consequences if we didn't!)</p> <p>ETA: I will admit that when I picture DS potentially doing this with my ILs I'm still a little ughhh about it, just because my MIL allows a lot of stuff I'm not cool with. But overall, I know he'd be safe, 12 is old enough, and it's a good opportunity to bond with the grandparents. I'm just jaded because my MIL likes to try to tell me what she's doing with my children instead of asking. Like the time she announced that she's taking my nephew to Disney when he turns 5, and then taking the nephew plus my son once he's 5. According to her, this will probably happen sometime in February. So yeah, a trip to the other side of the country in the middle of his first year of school, to my favorite place in the world when I've made it abundantly clear that his first trip will be with just DH and I, and won't take place until he's 6 or 7. I really want my kids to have good relationships with their grandparents, I had that and I feel like it is so special. Also I know my parents and IL's would absolutely love it! I also tend not to see these things as a choice for a 12 year old, so whether they want to go or not wouldn't play a HUGE role (unless it was a good reason they did not want to go)...
