Will your sister do it cheaper? My sister was our realtor to buy our first house and she gave us back her entire commission. If we sell she won’t be our realtor again (she’s not local enough) but she will refer us to someone and give us back her referral fee. Just something to consider...

IF they are equally good, I feel like you kinda have to go with your sister (since this is pretty much where she's headed). I feel like your long time agent would understand, where as your sister might be offended.

Could you use her to buy and the other realtor to sell (especially if they are a specialist in your area/ know your neighborhood well?) Maybe that is too complicated but it wouldn’t hurt feelings? I see both sides.... we have used the same realtor for many years as well even though we have friends in the business because he does such a great job.

I think it would depend on if they were good/serious about their job. Like the previous poster said. If it were a side gig, or they were just starting up, I'd go with my previous realtor, otherwise I'd try using the sibling.

I also agree that if you aren't going to use them, I'd let then know ASAP, and I wouldn't be looking at houses together. If you don't want to use them, keep family and the house process separate.

I’d use my sister. Especially if you’re sending her properties for her opinion, etc.

Easier to say to a realtor “sorry my sister joined the business” then “sorry we have a realtor” to your sister, IMHO.

I use my brother as our realtor and think he does a better job for us then other realtors we’ve shopped or used in the past. Even if he didn’t we would still go with him so long as he was on par with the other realtor.

If you want to use the realtor you have a relationship with, you need to let your sister know ASAP. I don’t think you’re obligated to use your sister, and if it were me I wouldn’t, but the longer she thinks you’re going to the worse it’s going to be. Good luck!

@Sams Mom: I would use the person who I felt was best for the job, regardless of whether they were my sibling or not.

For me, if my sibling were a good realtor and its not just a low sale/purchase side job, I'd feel inclined to have them make the sale/money over a realtor just cause I've been using them in the past.

We are semi seriously looking at moving. The main reason is all of this quarantine in a subdivision sized yard makes my husband and I realize what we're depriving our kids of. We both grew up on land, and want that for our kids.

So here is my question, we have used the same realtor to buy and sell the 2 houses we've owned. (I also rented from him in college) So I've had a relationship with our Realtor for 11 years. My older sister is now a broker, and I sent her a property just for her to look at it, like we always do when looking at houses for funsies.

Now she's talking about taking us out to see it, and I have no intentions of using her as our real estate agent, because we've always used my friend...

Would you use your sibling, even though you have an already established relationship with an agent?
