@winniebee: I would have a meeting with the director. It seems like it would be without question to call a parent when their chid throws up. Hope T feels better soon. Poor baby!

Sorry :-(

They should have called you, especially if you called them earlier asking about how he was. I can tell you're really frustrated, and I would be, too. Maybe you need to schedule some time to sit with the director and discuss your concerns. You are paying them a lot of money to take care of your child, and you need to know that they are going to let you know when your child is sick and if there is anything going on.

I hope he feels better really soon - good luck with everything!

So I'm not sure what the communication problem is....but today I texted the director to check up on him and got a little report. She said he was fine and she woudl let me know if anything changed. Then I followed up just now and found out that he vomited before his afternoon nap.....and I'm just now finding out about it because I texted not because they called me? She said he seems fine now, but don't you think they should have let me know immediately? I'm not sure how to go about this, but if my kid vomits, I expect to know ASAP!!!!! Going to get him now for a doctor's checkup because of all of this.

Oh poor guy - I'm sorry he's not feeling well :-( I know it's so tough to find out that your LO hasn't been feeling good while in someone else's care.

I know that if DD is fussy or not feeling well, the daycare will write notes on her paper, but it does not necessarily warrant a call to the parents. And I think @PinkElephant had a good point about the white out on the form. They may have been used to him eating all of his food. And since babies go through days where they may eat everything in sight and days where they hardly touch their bottle, it may not have been that "off".

I would probably call in a couple times today to see how he's feeling - there's nothing wrong with checking in on your little guy :-)

@winniebee: If you want you can always call too and just ask for a status report. I call LO's daycare twice a day to check and see how he's doing.

I asked about the changing of the form and also how he was diong yesterday. His teacher said that she changed the form because he sort of snacked - she wrote down one amount and then he only took a few ounces, then a few more, etc. She also said she thought he was off yesterday, but thought it was teething or his cold. I just told her to call me if he seems sick today (he seemed fine this morning....).

Thanks!

I would just ask. Do you call during the day to check in? Did they say anything then? I've noticed that if LO does not have a fever they don't call. But if I call they tell me exactly what he's doing.

I always go to the director (who is also very hands-on) whenever I have a question or concern. They're very used to parents with lots of questions so I'm sure it's no big deal for them if you speak up. I'm sure there's a good explanation (maybe one caregiver filled out the form who is used to him finishing his whole bottles, then someone else who actually fed him today corrected her and they had to change it?) but in any case it's better to talk about it and have peace of mind rather than wonder and worry!!

For our daycare, I only expect a call if he gets injured where it leaves a mark or if he has a fever above 101. If he was lethargic with no fever (or even if he threw up) I would expect to learn about it at pickup. (Then again, he's much older than your LO!)

@Winniebee: Exactly! I think they just need to know what works for your family in terms of reports. I'm sure they have some families who want to know every detail, and some who just want to grab their kids and go. If they know you would welcome their calls at the office (and wouldn't get annoyed at them for interrupting your day, like some parents might), I bet in the future they'll be more apt to make the call.

@Bao: Thanks! I mean, it could be that they wrote another baby's report on his form? Or maybe they just assumed he would drink it all, but didn't. Either way, I appreciate them conveying what acutally happeend, but it makes me wonder why a change was needed in the first place.

@PinkElephant: That does help, thanks! And generally I'm not concerned with what he eats there since he seems to eat better for them than for me! But I do know since I've been sick this week I've been hypersensitive to him getting sick and it sort of leaves me wondering what happened today....and should they have called....or should they have given my husband a report when he picked them up. I think I'll feel better if I mention it to them even if it was a one-off weird day.

I wouldn't worry so much as to them not calling you if he didn't have a fever, because at the daycare I worked at the only way we would make a call is if there was vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever. If they called every time they thought "he may be" not feeling well, that may be too much. However, I would most definitely ask about them whiting out what he ate, why would they putt all but then white it out and change it? Are they maybe being lazy and just writing in all, assuming since he normally eats it all, that he will, but then realized he didn't? I don't know, definitely something I would ask about...I would be concerned, could be something simple and have a great explanation, but I'm sure you will feel better if you ask!

I'd say when in doubt, just ask what happened - can you phrase it from the perspective that the exact numbers are important to you or his GI doctor (I remember from a previous post that you are concerned about intake b/c he's a small baby) because you want to be sure he eats enough to keep gaining weight? That way it doesn't seem like you are accusing them of being neglectful, which I don't think you are at all, you're just letting them know you want to have a clear understanding of what is going on.

From an optimistic point of view, maybe his caregiver has gotten used to him taking a whole bottle, so she prematurely wrote "all" a few times, then needed to change her record after he didn't eat everything. It doesn't seem like they were being deliberately dishonest - actually it seems the opposite.

To answer your question about what others do, I don't have our nanny contact me about eating less then usual or general not feeling well symptoms, but I do expect a full report when I return, and she is meant to call me if there is any symptom that requires immediate attention. That said, I'm not gone all day, only a few hours at a time, and I might feel differently if I was away the whole day and expect more "check points". I think it's perfectly fine and sensible for you to speak openly to your daycare provider about that, and let them know if in the future you would like to be contacted when he's eating less or spitting up more than usual, so that you can decide whether or not you want to come pick him up early.

Hope that helps!

I like my son's daycare and he seems to do well there. He allegedly drinks all of his milk there because on the occasions he does not, they note the amount that he drank rather than saying "all." Today my husband picked my son up from daycare while I was at a work event. According to my husband, my son was lethargic and cranky. I had a stomach bug on Monday so I'm not surprised LO is sick. So here's my questions:

- Would you have expected daycare to call about my son's "lethargic" behavior? I did not witness it, but my husband said he was "obviously not feeling well" even though he had no fever. My LO also threw up (well, big spit ups) twice this evening with my husband.

- On his daycare form, there was white out next to the milk amounts. It appears that they had written "All" after a few of his bottles indicating that he drank all of his milk, but then whited it out and then wrote what he actually drank. Which was less than usual, by 1 or 1.5 oz. Do you think the whiting out is odd? I have never seen this before or questioned what they wrote, but now I'm doubting everything. Should I ask about it? I hate confrontation, but want to know what happened. Finally, if he drank an ounce less each time today, do you think that should have warranted a call?

I don't know, I'm new at this and my kid has had colds but has never really been sick or eaten less at daycare (or maybe it would be one bottle, but not all 3). Should I say something to them? If so, do I try to speak with his teachers or go to the director (who is very hands on?)
