@tinyperson: DH is not that into hockey either that he would care to wear the jersey himself. He doesn't even really watch it on TV. I just know he would have fun attending a game in person though.

@californiadreams: Haha - M and S had matching ones last year, but I haven't bothered getting a bigger one for S this year. They are getting matching Dallas Cowboys tees though this year though...

@delight: that does sound like a fun idea. i just don't think we can swing an overnight trip now. we would have to bring LO, so i couldn't attend the game still, so that would defeat the purpose, and we don't have the extra time off work at all to do that. but it is definitely a possibility in the future!

@Mamaof2: @blackbird: it would definitely have to be a surprise. DH is so practical that if i told him in advance, he would tell me not to get tickets and save money, lol. Plus the fun would be that he is just a handed a fun night out. He never does things for himself and works so hard, i wanted to surprise him with something. If we had a sitter and it was a regular saturday night, it would be simple. It is the cost to do that (which does't match the quality of the seats) that is the main issue i guess. And now the fact that we don't have a sitter.

I think i will wait until next year. We have talked about other gift ideas for each other - basically things we are planning to buy anyway, but if the other one pays for it, we will call it a gift. And we are fine to do that this year given that we are putting so much money into our house already and we want it done! i just wanted to do something fun for him too and surprise him.

Anyone have any other ideas??

@californiadreams: Is it a surprise? Can you ask him what he thinks?

My DH would totally go alone for awesome seats! We are actually heading to FL for the PSU bowl game and we could do cheaper tickets for 4 people or he could get himself a seat in the club section - I told him to go for the club seat and me and the kids would go sight seeing - that's what he did and he is so excited!!

I would send DH with a friend. $500 is more than I am comfortable spending without his knowledge. Mine goes to movies alone but not a sporting event

I got DH concert tickets awhile ago and it was a whole orchestration-he knew about it and still enjoyed it a lot! I don't think something like this is well suited to being a surprise

@californiadreams: yes Toronto vs Montreal games are so pricey! That's too bad about your sitter. I would just try for next year. I know you really want to see the game in Toronto but for the same price as two tickets to one of those games you could stay for two nights in Niagara Falls (Canada side) and go to a Buffalo game. Just an idea. I don't know how old your LO is though so maybe overnights are not an option yet. Good luck with your gift for this year!

@delight: i am actually in Toronto, but from Montreal, so it wouldn't make sense to watch the Leafs play anyone but Montreal....sigh. I guess i will have to plan better for next year and figure out something else for this year. I haven't completely ruled out the single ticket, but haven't convinced myself either (not sure if you saw my above post that my babysitter is not available, so going together is not an option anymore).

@tinyperson: @californiadreams: I just bought Habs tickets last night for DH. We will go watch them play in Buffalo. It wasn't overly expensive but I find the buffalo games aren't too bad. I would love to go to Montreal to watch a game but can't afford that. To answer your original question, I wouldn't buy single tickets. I'd keep looking for something cheaper or try again next year. I would always want to go as well, make it a fun date/hotel night. I like buying gifts for DH where I benefit too with a mini vacation.

@birdofafeather: it is because of the teams playing. all other options of different teams are way way cheaper. And this one happens to be on a Saturday night several weeks before my due date, so the timing is perfect. But i also would not want to buy tickets for any team other than this one.

@birdofafeather: it is partly the cost and the fact that the seats i would get for that cost are not that amazing. If they were the best seats in the house, i would be less hesitant. It just doesn't seem worth it to spend $500+ for an evening at a hockey game when we would be sitting in the nosebleed section. So if I wait until next year, i will hopefully remember to buy tickets as soon as they go on sale for the season and get better seats. And hopefully the cost will be less of an issue because we will done most of our major house renos etc (we just moved a few months ago). We have been spending a lot of money in general lately.

However, this time next year i will be in the second half of my mat leave and making far less money.....hence another reason why i wanted to do it this year!

DH is totally okay going to see a movie alone. And he is very practical, so i feel like it is his voice in my head saying not to spend that much money. I am waiting to hear back from our sitter to see if she available and then i will think about it some more. The problem with doing this next year is that we will also have an 11 month old. I am not sure if we will want to go out alone and leave both kids with a sitter by then. I could plan in my advance for my mom to visit though....But i would rather wait and see how easy/difficult DS2 turns out to be (he is due this Feb)

I just got DH some tickets to a Canucks game! He's going to be so surprised. I personally wouldn't buy the single ticket cause that would be kinda weird. If you can get 2 good tickets together, I would do that and let him take a buddy

I was thinking of getting DH hockey tickets for Christmas and just looked up what is available. The ideal game/date has single tickets that are quite pricey and also limited availability. If I were to buy us 2 tickets together, it would more than double the cost and the seats might be even worse. AND we would have to pay for a babysitter that night.

I know DH is pretty independent and would likely enjoy the game even if he goes alone, but i still feel weird about gifting him a single ticket as it is basically saying "go enjoy this by yourself". If i got 2 tickets, and we couldn't book a sitter, he would still have the option of asking a coworker or friend to go with him (although he typically never sees friends outside of work).

What would you do? I'll put a poll with my options.
