Thanks for all of the feedback! I'll have to ask my husband if the doctor mentioned anything about a respiratory infection (the lungs being our primary concern driving the visit). Her ears were not even on my radar, and I wouldn't know what to look for if we were waiting for an infection to develop.

New wrinkle: my mom, who spends a LOT of time with LO and has been having similar symptoms, went to the doctor yesterday, too. After a chest X-ray, she also came home with a prescription for antibiotics.

@lady baltimore: my son had an awful reaction to amox. We found out he was allergic. I wouldn't give antibiotics unless it was a definite on the ear infection.

So we've been in this situation with both our little ones but they always had a fever too. The ears looked like it could be the beginning of an infection so she would send us home with a prescription as a "just in case", especially if it was close to the weekend. If the fever didn't go down in the next couple days or the symptoms got worse we could call and then fill the prescription.

Both times we never needed it, but it was nice to know we had it just in case.

Hmm really tough to say. How is her behavior? Our youngest just went through this - rattly snotty chest, runny nose and not eating well. Towards the end he was acting miserable. Super whiny and not eating. We took him in and he had a double hear infection and bronchitis - so we went for the antibiotics and within a day or two he was his happy self and had no tummy troubles. If your LO is snotty and rattly chest but doesn't seem bothered by her ears, I'd probably skip them.

I would wait till it's an actual infection?

Ugh, DD2 has had snotty nose for a long while now and she's been more proned to ear infections than DD1. But I feel like doctor would either say no, her ears are fine or yes, she has an infection, and not maybe?!

For ear infection ONLY I would wait a couple days and judge based on fever and behaviour. DS just had a fever for 3 days and had a confirmed ear infection and was miserable so we did amoxicillin. He rallied in 24 hours. FWIW he has taken it about 4x in 3 years and we have never had adverse effects.

In terms of being sick with a cold and cough and weird breathing for a month, I would be potentially pushing for a chest X-ray to rule out bronchitis or pneumonia. We ended up in hospital for 8 days with pneumonia so breathing issues make me nervous.

With all things considered in your case I would take the meds.

Its weird to me also that they prescribed them for a possible ear infection. DD1 had awful ear infections but we never gave antibiotics until it was a legit infection. If there was simply a fluid build up we were usually ordered to monitor closely for a fever and bring her back in X days to look at the fluid again.

I'm generally not opposed to antibiotics but it seems pre-preemptive to administer them for maybe nothing?

FWIW - we've never had tummy issues from antibiotics and we've used them a lot.

In this case I would if your doctor recommended it (and if not I wouldn’t). DD2 has had a lot of ear infections this year, and my mom (a nurse) pushes going to the doctor and giving her an antibiotic at the first sight of weird looking snot. I prefer to wait it out, and there have absolutely been times where she’s fought it on her own so it’s a case by case basis for me. But when she has lots of other symptoms like yours does, it could be an indication of maybe a sinus infection or something else and the antibiotic could really help. I actually chose to go that route just last month. Amoxicillin is pretty mild on the stomach, and it’s not like you’ve been in and out of the doctors all winter (which I was so I knew an antibiotic wasn’t a cure all for us). If it turns into a revolving door, I’d take it on a case by case basis. Our pediatrician is actually really good about saying “let’s wait to treat this” and “this one needs to be treated now.”

@lady baltimore: I wouldn’t at this point. I’d wait to see if the ear infection comes. Unless you’re also trying to clear up a respiratory infection but I think the doctor would have mentioned that.

We just jumped the gun on antibiotics for a UTI because LO had the classic symptoms. The culture came back clean and I wish I would have waited. It was an unnecessary week of worry about tummy side affects + overuse of antibiotics.

At a month of this, I would probably do it. We just had to give the same to my oldest after I think 10 days of cold symptoms followed by a nasty cough and fever for a sort of nonspecific infection too, but with ears and sounds of fluid starting to build up in the lungs. Her first time having abx was after about a month of coughing. I don't know if I would give for that now without a fever. I am pretty wary of it too.

In this case, yes. Since it's your LO's first time doing antibiotics and this sickness has lingered so long I think it's worthwhile.

DS had chronic war infections from nine to 13 months. He finally saw an ENT, who was outspoken about the overuse of antibiotics. But in my mind a one-time occurrence is fine for the meds.

DS got tubes eight months ago and luckily hasn't needed amoxicillin since.

@lady baltimore: our little is the same age 2.5 and has had two instances of possible ear infection last year at this time and two weeks ago. The doctors said both times they suspected ear infection due to the high fever but couldn’t see his ears clearly due to the wax build up. We did the antibiotics both times. Amoxicillin and no yummy upset.

For us he’s only had antibiotics twice in his lifetime and was so sick both times I felt it was warranted. And ear infections are so terribly painful if it was that I was willing to risk us g the drugs. Both times his fever had come down within 3 doses.

That seems weird. When I’ve brought my kids and they had possible infections like that’s, our doctors have always recommended waiting on antibiotics. But my older daughter did have a ton of ear infections and did have to take a lot of antibiotics in a short time.

I have no idea what I would do. I might just try them if she doesn’t get better in a few days wth the steam, and hope for the best.

But when either of my kids have taken amoxicillin without any stomach upset. Augmentin did bother my older one a little bit even that wasn’t too bad.

The details:

LO, two and a half, has had mild-to-moderate cold symptoms for close to a month now. The runny nose ebbs and flows, but she has a persistent cough and chest congestion, particularly just before and after sleeping. It was the rattling breathing that prompted us to finally decide to take her in to the pediatrician. DH took her today, and the doctor saw slightly swollen tonsils and a "possible" ear infection brewing. Negative for strep. Recommended fluids and steam for the chest congestion, and prescribed 10 days of amoxicillin.

I am extremely wary of antibiotic over-use, but LO has also never taken them before, so it's not like we've overloaded her system.
