I would, and did (Canada into the US) ... but then I've been post dates with all my pregnancies and it never crossed my mind that I might go into labour that early.

Nope. LO2 arrived at 37+2 and I hadn't had any signs of labor until the day of (bloody show then water broke 4 hours later). Once the contractions started, she was born within 45 minutes

I think if you're showing no signs of labor and go 2hrs or less away it should be fine. But it wouldn't hurt to check and see what your insurance covers if something were to happen!

I guess it all depends on which border you are talking about... Living in the US, I would probably feel comfortable in Canada but definitely not in Mexico. I live in the NE, so Mexico is far from home while Canada is a few hours by car.

In theory, probably. In reality, the thought of that bridge in the summer might be enough to scare me away. Giving birth in Canada is one thing; I would be afraid of going into labor on that stupid bridge in the middle of a traffic jam :silly:

I was around 30 weeks when I travelled to Montreal to visit friends. I purchased travelers health insurance for the weekend (I think it cost $40) and it covered up to $500K USD. I had to make sure it was one that covered pregnancy and that I travelled with my medical records.

No but I wouldn't even leave town during the ending weeks. I am very cautious. I'd say if you couldn't deal with possibly givin birth there don't go. Babies come when they want to. Good luck!

Personally I wouldn't because having a baby in the us with no insurance would kill out finances:) (Canadian bee here!) and also lo#2 came in 3 hours from my first contraction:) I wouldn't judge anyone who decided to do it, though!!:) have a great anniversary regardless of what u decide to do!

Same as @MrsB2012: I went into labor at 37+3 (water broke) and LO was born less than 7 hours later. I'd have been a mess if we had far to go to get to the hospital.

I would probably do it if I were showing no labor signs. I work an hour away from home and it's closer to 2 hours in Friday traffic sometimes but I still went to work every day in my 3rd trimester (until the week before LO arrived).

It's not a different country but I feel like unless you have incredibly fast laboratory, you have time.

If it makes you feel more prepared-- keep your hospital bags in the trunk.

I wouldn't cross the border because US hospital costs are $$$!! My private insurance would have covered a bit but not fully. I would check into your policy. When we were in Maine when I was 7 months pregnant my dh joked that if I went into labor I would have to cross my legs while we high tailed it back to Canada! Lol

@locavore_mama: I mean, anything could happen. I would be more worried about how I felt physically than going into labor. How far is your hospital away from there and how long were you in labor with your LO? I think if you want to go, you should go, and just have a game plan. For instance if you start experiencing real contractions before the trip, then cancel.

Man, I wish Canada still gave citizenship to babies born there because I'd go over to have my baby just for that! :silly:
