@sloaneandpuffy: ha! Great analogy.

I left on good terms but I was shocked about the layoff as were my co workers. There was no clear cut as to whom they laid off. ie There were people who made more than me and were not there as long that did not get laid off. So needless to say my confidence was greatly shaken. And I felt like I did a lot for the firm culture. Which all to me felt under appreciated.

Not even a reality just hearing some rumblings that there might be an offer. And another job I put a résumé into awhile ago wants to know if I'm still interested.

I am currently employed but it's technically a temp job. When I asked about my future at the firm they were non committal.

I did, though it's a little different situation. I was laid off during a round of corporate downsizing but 6 weeks later they called and asked me to come back in a higher position than I was originally in. It was in a different group, so different I had a different manager, but in the same department. I'm still there 3 years later, so it's worked out just fine... though my former peers that I now indirectly manage were a bit miffed for a while.

I would if I was unemployed but I wouldn't feel bad leaving in the future if a better opportunity came up!

That would depend. If I was still unemployed I definitely would! But I would probably also continue looking around at other options just in case. If I was happily employed I wouldn't leave my current job to go back to the old job.

I've known people who did- the company had some lay offs that were only based by how long you'd been there and pay grade, so not personal. Someone who ha just made the cut got a new job so someone else who had been laid off came back without losing the years she had been there (and vacation time tied to that). Worked fine for her, but I would probably be bitter and keep looking for something that would appreciate me more.

Not if I could avoid it! Isn't that like going back with an old boyfriend who didn't appreciate you?

Wait, am I remembering that you are an architect, or do I have that wrong? I think this is rather common in architecture right now. (DH is an architect too.) Luckily he has never been put in this position. I can see how it would be awkward, so I guess it really depends on how you feel about the people there. If you know that they would welcome you back with open arms, then I would do it.

my SIL went back to a job she was laid off from. She was laid off because another company bought hers and they cut a lot of jobs, but then soon after they realized they needed some back. She likes it there still - says it's not much different than before. Certainly depends on why/how you were laid off (and if there were no burnt bridges) and also if the company you're going back to has changed in a way you wouldn't like (different culture, different workload, hours, etc)

Why or why not?

Anyone go back to a job they were laid off from? How did it go?
