@Anagram: My mom thought she had pink eye so she went to the eye doctor and it turns out she has a plugged tear duct...the symptoms presented the same, and she's on antibiotic drops.

@Anagram: Yup. The dilemma is that it's for a bacterial infection and I had a viral infection. It specifically says not to use it for a viral infection (which 2 different doctors confirmed I had) yet it was still prescribed? I think it was also the quantity the had me using that caused the issues as well. It was pretty much 6 to 8 weeks of me looking like a straight up leper.

I would go for a second opinion if it isn't better by the time the cold clears up for sure. As in, I wouldn't see that doctor anymore. Urgent care kind of sucks, I don't think you're that likely to get better care for anything that isn't obvious there. Or at least that has been my experience. I do get burning eyes when I get bad colds and it is honestly the part of the cold I usually dread the most.

@LBee: 6 times a day is a lot! I never used it more than 3 times a day. I don't remember the initial steroid drop I used, but I was on it for about 6 months before I was switched to Lotemax. I think the Lotemax is a lower dosage and safe for long term use. I was on that for about a year. It took a long time for my issue to clear up!

@KT326: How consistently are you using them? They had me using them 6 times a day for 15 straight days. If you google it, it's a pretty common problem. The rebound is just severe red eye and inflammation... aka the problem I was trying to remedy with the steroid drops :silly:

ETA: It was prednisone (it had a pink top)

@LBee: that's interesting about the steroid drops. I've been on and off them for my eye issues and have never had a problem. Maybe it depends on the type of steroid?

I went through the worst pink eye (viral not bacterial) ever this past fall. I actually remember reading @avivoca: 's posts at the time and crying because I was scared it would last as long as hers (it did). It doesn't to me sound like typical pink eye. It almost sounds like allergies, which would make sense considering we are in the midst of a season change.

My only real feedback is to use the eye gels not drops. It's a game changer. My eye doctor recommended Systane gel drops and they made such a difference in terms of moisture level. Also, if anyone offers your steroid drops - avoid them if you can!! It ends up your eye can quickly become addicted to them (weird way to put it) and you can get huge steroid rebound that is incredibly painful. The steroid rebound doubled my recovery time because I didn't know I was supposed to go through this long drawn out discontinuation process.

@Anagram: Absolutely. And funny you say that about GI issues. I'm going to go completely off subject, but my dermatologist wrote a white paper on IBS and how it might be a food allergy. He discovered that his IBS was really an intolerance for garlic. Once he eliminated garlic from his diet, all of his IBS symptoms disappeared. So he wrote this whitepaper about it. He had done scratch tests on himself to see what types of food he was allergic to, and the garlic was the only thing that popped up.

It's all incredibly fascinating to me, but I do recommend seeing an allergist if not just to rule out allergies as the cause.

@2PeasinaPod: I think I might make an appt with an allergist. I've also had some long term GI problems, and although my GI doctor does *not* think my issuea are because of food intolerances, I figure it can't hurt to find out everything (environmental, anything else).

@Anagram: Yes...I specifically went to an allergist to find out if I had environmental allergies. It was a fairly long appointment with a scratch test on my back. I lit up like a Christmas tree. The only things I weren't allergic to were grasses and some animals. But almost every type of spring tree pollen popped up, summer/fall weeds popped up, and molds as well as dog and cat dander popped up. Dust mites and cockroaches were also high on the list.

So while it might not be what's going on with you, it wouldn't hurt to try to go and see if you have seasonal allergies. In the meantime, I'd try and find a new ophthalmologist.

@Anagram: I'd go get a second opinion. The eyes are tough, and I was having issues with them after both boys as well. I got pink eye while I was pregnant with LO2, and my eyes have never been the same.

I did realize that I had some pretty significant allergies that I didn't know I had and I've been putting Zaditor in each eye every morning and every night...especially now that it's spring. I've found that helps quite a bit. But if you think it's dry eye and it's not being helped by artificial tears, it certainly doesn't hurt to find someone else.

@Pumuckl: that was one of the things the doctor said Friday--could be allergies and so told me to pick up an over-the-counter eye drop for "allergy related burning and itching", but those aren't helping. For some reason, he seemed convinced that I was suffering from a case of full-body inflammation that was caused by not following a Primal diet. Which, hey, maybe I am....but I haven't been on a primal diet my whole life and my eyes just got worse this last week at the same time I got a cold virus, sooo.....

@Anagram: ugh what a nightmare! I would definitely go to a different doctor but not urgent care. I recently had a severe corneal abrasion and went to the ER since urgent care was closed. A good friend is an NP at urgent care and said the ER was the best place to go after hours. Urgent care rarely has access to specialists and you definitely need an ophthalmologist for this. I would also think it could be what @KT326 said, the herpes virus. My mom recently had that and her symptoms were identical to what you describe. it was easily cleared up with antibiotics. Hopefully you can find another ophthalmologist in your area that insurance covers! Go ASAP!

@Anagram: I would go see someone else. This sounds somewhat like what my husband had this past summer which ended up being a case of uveitis which can get bad quickly and can be very easily treated with steroid eye drops. Over the counter eye lubricants and antibiotics will do nothing for it if that's what it is. His eyes were very pink/red and he got a bad headache and they were sensitive to light. He got it after he had a fever/cold for a few days beforehand and within a day and steroid drops it was already starting to feel better.

The er doctor has prescribed him antibiotics which he had started and then he visited our family doctor a day or two later who was very concerned and said go see an eye doctor. The eye doctor diagnosed it right away.

I feel your pain. In 2015 I had an eye infection for EIGHT WEEKS. I went to the eye doctor three different times, saw three different doctors, and got three different diagnosis. One said I had a viral pink-eye, one said I had chlamydia of the eye and I needed to talk to my husband since I said we were monogamous, and one told me I had some kind of mite on my eyelashes and that was causing my problem. Six weeks and $120 later, my eyes were still super red, itchy, and watery.

I ended up going to urgent care and getting a $5 antibiotic that cleared it up. Whatever.

I changed eye doctors after that.

@Anagram: that is crazy. I'm so sorry you had to deal with him. Hopefully you get an answer soon. I basically get cold sores in my eye (it's from the same virus). My eye gets super red and it feels like I have sandpaper on my eyelids. It also gets really crusty in the mornings, so gross. Luckily I've only had it a few times but it has been bad enough that it has caused other problems along with scarring on my cornea. So I'm very protective of my eyes and try to get it at the first sign of anything.

@KT326: yes, it was an ophthalmologist. He actually said the opposite of what my old ophthalmologist has told me--he said my eyes weren't that dry. And he also told me they weren't red, although they are SUPER red and all day my coworkers and students have been asking me what's wrong with me eyes. He essentially told me I'm not really having an issue at all, but if I feel like I am, I should explore elimination diets and try a primal diet. eye roll.

@ElbieKay: I might take you up on that info. I've tried the only ophthalmologist where we live, and he's fine but if you've read reviews from people you know the wait is usually suuuuper long (like 2 hours sometimes and it doesn't matter if you have an appointment). So I tried a new place up where I work and there was virtually no wait, but the doctor was rude.

Blah. I guess I want answers more than just artificial tears. I mean, if this isn't pink eye, I have a severe case of *something* that artificial tears aren't helping.

@Anagram: Let me know if you want the contact info for my opthamalogist. He's on the UES, so not that easy to get to, but he has a gentle bedside manner and is an expert in his field (glaucoma research, not that I have glaucoma).

I have dry eyes too. I routinely put artificial tears into my eyes before I get out of bed. Sucks.

Are you going to an ophthalmologist? I would definitely get a second opinion. I have severe eye problems and see a cornea specialist.

I would definitely go to a doctor, and not that same one. I would probably try a regular doc.
