ugh!

Alright well forget that idea!

Instead I'll ask for some heavy duty pain pills!

I had LOTS of breakthrough bleeding while on the pill... kinda had it twice.

I would deal with my period and start taking meds the day before as a precautionary measure. It's easier to combat cramps if you already are on a regiment of motrin...get ahead of them and it won't be quite as bad.

I react horribly to hormones in any way. I came off of birth control and it took me forever to regulate...not to mention I felt crazy. I had to briefly go back on them for fertility issues, and it made me crazy. I try to avoid them at all costs.

BCP give me horrible moods, so this is just a. Ire of caution. Aside from that, the first BCP I was prescribed, I bled for a month straight (didn't matter placebo pill or not). After the first month my periods were 2 weeks long (would start the week before placebo). The next poll was much better but I would have breakthrough bleeding if I tried to skip.

@youboots: @Foodnerd81: Its been over 10 years since I was on them and I am now 41 - maybe its not a great idea?

Have you been on the pill before? I seem to be more affected by hormones than average, so I'd either start, like, yesterday, or just deal with it. I would rather deal with the yucky side effects that I know (from your period) than unknown possible side effects from starting a new pill. But if you've been on it before with no side effects, worth a shot I guess.

Disclaimer: I have had one actual period in the last 4.5 years, between pregnancy and breastfeeding, so there's a good chance I don't remember quite how unpleasant it is!!

I was just thinking about this. I would go on them as long as you have been on them before and take two months worth (6 weeks, no placebo) I think a wonky cycle when you get back is better than feeling awful while on an expensive trip.

@Mamaof2: I would go on them ASAP, it always takes me months to regulate. And I've tried the skipping placebo pills trick and it never works, but everyone is different! Good luck!

@Mamaof2: I think you should start them in April. My recollection is you can start taking them whenever (but it's better to start on the first day of your period). I would skip the placebos in April as well as May (taking the placebos is what induces a period). I just don't think starting a few weeks before your trip will do the trick!

@winniebee: that was my next question of when to start - also I was more likely thinking of starting them at some point and just staying on the active pills until I get back from my trip. So starting 2 weeks before I leave? Starting on Day 1 the month before?

@Mamaof2: sometimes your cycle can take a little while to regulate after going on BCP - so I think if you wanted to miss your period in May you'd need to go on now!

I would seriously consider it if I had that severe side effects from my period.
I would take something like the Nuvaring. That way you don't have to keep up with taking pills. Also the amount of hormones is minimal.

I am headed out of the country in May - I am due to start my period the day I fly out - ugh!!!!

My mom suggested I go on BCP for a month - just wondering how awful it was mess up my cycle. Then again I am done having kids so does it matter if my cycle was messed up?

I get HORRIBLE cramps on day 1 and 2 and usually have a migraine on day 1 - I have migraine meds but the thought of dealing with tampons, etc while sight seeing sounds awful!

Anyway - what would you do?
