My DD was due just 2 weeks before my DS's birthday, so I did not plan a party. She ended up arriving earlier than expected, but I would not have wanted to deal with a party and a newborn. It was also winter, so I wanted to avoid germ contact.

@Boogs: The last two years, his birthday has had perfect weather. Of course, that means this year it will rain. It's usually in the 70s or 80s, though.

@regberadaisy: hugs!!

@Boogs: Yeah, I think the menu of nothing hot (just bagels, donuts, fruit, juice) will help a lot. People won't expect a huge meal at 10am. I hope the park turns out as awesome as I'm imagining!!

That park sounds so cool! I like that you want to do more of a simple brunch theme. Between that and getting things done ahead of time I think you can do it if things stay simple. I love party planning, so I know how you feel.

I'm planning on a small party/open house for my to-be two year old when #2 is a week old. My mom and sisters will do most of the set up and I plan to cater the food.

It won't be the easiest thing in the world but I have a certain amount of guilt that their birthdays will be so close.

I have a one month old and 29 month right now and I say no freaking way unless you are paying someone else OR you have family and friends that you can depend on helping out big time. I won't be able to do either.
We might do an open house soon so family can meet her.. But I'm going to push to just order pizza and wings and that's it. I cannot depend on ILs to help.

P. S. If it's just order food, store cake and a few bought decorations then probably yes. But anything blog worthy? No.

P. P. S. I do not have a easy baby. If she was a way baby that eat, sleeps and poops? Of course.

I say this coming from a position of still being pregnant with #2, so I haven't had the experience of having a toddler and a nb yet, but I would totally still have a party for LO1. I don't think it's necessary to invite the whole class or have a big circus- that may be overwhelming! But at 3yo, any party will be loads of fun:)

We had a huge party when S turned 2, when A was only 8 weeks old. It was only huge because we have huge families. It was doable, but a LOT of work. I felt like it was worth it though, because it made S feel so special after rocking her world by bringing home her sister.

@mrs. tictactoe: sounds like so much fun and I bet Liam will love it! I'd just do as much as possible in advance - guestlist, invites ready to go, favors, menu planned, etc. and make sure you have people lined up to help! I'd also keep it to family and Liam's select BFF's :)

Dd2 was 2 weeks old when DD1 turned 2. We planned a joint bday with one of her best friends and to be honest the other mom did most of the work(we planned it that way) so it was totally feasible and nice. I bought all the decorations before and she set it up. If you have help, definitely go for it.

I would seriously consider scheduling it a few weeks after his birthday. It'd be much easier to deal with a 6wo than a 4wo. And if the baby is late you risk having a 3wo or even a 2wo at the party.

If you really don't think your son will notice, I might even attempt to schedule it a month late so that the baby has had his/her 2mo vaccinations.

@mrs. tictactoe: I agree that I wouldn't bother inviting kids from preschool. That way you will know everyone there and you won't have to worry about whether parents are feeling left out when you are concentrating on your baby and making sure the party is running smoothly. Your son will love being the center of attention and won't miss them and it will make the planning a little bit easier!

Elliot & Finn's 2nd birthday is 6 weeks after my due date. We will definitely have a party, but I've decided to keep it really small, just a cake, ice cream, and family kind of thing. For me, the idea of having a newborn and toddlers is already stressing me out enough that I just can't take on anything major that early on.

I think you should do whatever feels right for you guys, but maybe just have a couple people on standby to jump in and help with anything that needs to be done for the party after the baby's born just in case you end up feeling overwhelmed.

The touching/holding is the only biggest concern, but since it's your second, I imagine you are less neurotic than you were with your first :) Hand sanitizer and babywearing and let the kids go bonkers on the playground. Plus it'll give L something to look forward to after the baby is born! You have family nearby and surely you know some of the preschool moms that can help?

@mrs. tictactoe: The help is the most important.

I just see a lot of issues. At 3 years old there will be a number of parents that will drop and run. So you will be in charge of those kids without their parents. And a big open space, just scares me. Now, these are my issues and in no way have to be your issues.

I have done all of the big parties but I can't imagine doing that with an infant (or in my case possibly still very pregnant).

@brownie: Hiring someone isn't really in the budget, but I'm hoping the park will be enough entertainment. My husband, his parents, and my parents will help a lot, I'm sure!

I'd totally have the party, but would be nervous inviting kids from preschool because of all the germs... though if the party is outside, that makes a big difference. It would be a good idea to ask the other kids not to touch the baby so the baby doesn't catch a cold.
