Definitely not. If anything were to go wrong, I would probably always blame myself.

no, i don't think so, but i that's because i <3 hospitals, i <3 nurses, and i <3 epidurals. :) I laboured med free (not by choice) until 10 cm last time before the epi and although i suppose i know now that i 'can do it', i don't really fancy doing it again for this baby comin up! :)

i do like reading stories about home births, though! :)

No way. Anything can happen and I'd much rather be in the appropriate place just in case it does. The concept of home birth seems nice and all but it's totally not for me. I've read too many stories to turn me completely off to the idea.

Besides, I'm already fully planning on gettin' the juice. Unfathomable amounts of pain when it can be avoided?? Um, no thanks.

We're planning on it for this one and I'm so excited!

After our hospital experience last time, I felt like I was fighting them at every turn for monitoring, policies, etc. I'm looking forward to being comfortable, laboring how I want, pushing how I want, trusting my body, and the experience of the midwives.

We rent, but we're a mile away from both the hospital that we were at for DD, and a mile away from the local children's hospital, so we're in a great location should any complications arise.

Yep, been there, done that with Baby #1. Thanks to staying OUT of the local hospital, my uterus remained intact and I wasn't on the hunt for a VBAC-friendly care provider when we moved to another state that is not well-known for its crunchiness. Had an unmedicated hospital birth with Baby #2 because I didn't feel comfortable birthing at home, 50 miles from a hospital that could help us in the very low chance that something would go wrong. Just planning #3 now, but I've done a lot of research, talked to the local midwives, etc., and I most likely will have another home birth with my 3rd delivery.

@Coco Bee: @Arden: Sorry ladies, I definitely mean midwives aren't as knowledgeable as the staff at a hospital! Those ladies deliver hundreds of babies so that clearly says something for them being knowledgeable right? Ha!

What I meant was should I change my mind for an epidural or need an emergency c-section, need NICU, etc, I'd be more comfortable knowing those options are RIGHT there. Most homebirth stories are about natural births and haven't heard about what happens in the case of a c-section or the baby becomes distressed during labor or post-birth. Lack of knowledge/research on my end mostly.

@Coco Bee: my entire (natural) labor was on the gurney in triage! I hated the triage nurse because she didn't believe me that I was in so much pain. She assumed FTM, I didn't know what I was talking about. Turns out I was in transition!! Hellish.

That said...epidural made my life. Hospital birth all the way for me!

@Arden: Thank you. I'm not entirely sure why she didn't - this was several years ago now, but I just remember that she was performing CPR until the paramedics arrived. I'm sure things have changed in recent years and more precautions are taken now to prevent situations like that from happening. I know it was a one in a million chance that this happened, but it has unfortunately forever shaped my view on the subject. Regardless, I think it's great that other people research the option and pursue it where appropriate!

Thanks for your kind words. :-)

@Arden: That's the big question - could the hospital have saved him? The midwife did CPR until the ambulance got there but by the time they got him to the hospital, he was pronounced dead. The question my cousin and his wife have struggled with has been would he have survived if he had been in hospital? If they could have intubated him, or given him oxygen, or something along those lines, would he have lived? It's one of those questions that we'll never know the answer to, and in all honesty, there is a very real possibility he may not have survived regardless of where he was born. It's just the not knowing that I think would get me. In regards to the autopsy, that was showing that there was nothing wrong with him physically that would have led to an inevitable death (i.e. a malformation of a vital organ or something like that), had that been the case, maybe it would have made it easier to accept, knowing that there was a fatal deformity, but as that wasn't the case, they're back to just wondering "what if".

I don't know, I fully appreciate the concept of a home birth and I certainly give massive props to those who choose to have one, but it's just not for me.

Yes definitely!!! I hope next time I'm able to keep my head on better & not transfer. :)

Homebirths have been found to be just as safe if not safer than hospital births with less operative & invasive deliveries. Many of the "what if" situations most worry about are almost non-existent in a homebirth because of there not being unnecessary interventions, like pitocin which greatly increases risk of pp hemorrhage. (Just one example)

Jennifer Kamel has a great write up on "Why Homebirth?" On her site vbacfacts.com. Definitely check it out if you haven't already. :)

@Ree723: I'm so sorry about your cousin's baby.
But I can't understand how being in a hospital would have made any difference. If they couldn't even find a cause in an autopsy, how could they have done anything in the hospital without knowing what was wrong?

No way. For one, there is no way I'd want to give birth without an epidural - those sweet, sweet drugs were amazing! Two, I'd want all the medical professionals/equipment etc right there in case any complications arose. And three, I'd never forgive myself if anything happened.

I have a cousin who had a home birth; she'd had a perfectly normal pregnancy, no complications, and all looked fine. She delivered her little boy at home, he took one breath, and then stopped breathing and died. The autopsy couldn't find a cause of death and they will never know whether or not he may have survived had he been born in a hospital. Sure that doesn't happen very often, but to me, it's not a risk I'd ever be willing to take.

That being said, midwife care is the norm here, even for hospital births, so I get the best of both worlds! If I have a baby in the States, I will be looking for midwife care, but one who delivers at hospitals.

Not a chance. In theory, I think it's a great idea, but I'd never take the risk. Even though the chance is small there still is a chance of complications and I would never forgive myself if something happened to my child. I would use a midwife in a hospital though. I'd just want a NICU and OR and pediatricians and other doctors nearby.

Plus with modern medicine, I want to be in a place where if anything happens I know they have all the equipment, hands, and medicine needed to help the baby and I. To me its a no brainier.

I pass no judgment on those who do, or want to, but it is not for me. Almost all the births in my family have had some type of complication (natural, not as a result of any medical interventions) and I wouldn't be comfortable giving birth outside of a hospital setting. With that being said, my hospital is pretty open to alternative pain management and my OB is very laidback - which makes it even easier to decide that :)

I would never take the risk of having a home birth and something going wrong during delivery....My hospital is 10 minutes away, but 10 minutes could be detrimental to my baby in an emergency situation!

I appreciate the idea of a homebirth, but I believe in medicine and doctors and having every precaution for my baby at my fingertips. Or at my vagina- lol.
