I love the idea of celebrating a new baby with those who are nearest and dearest. I'd also say though that it should be a casual affair - no big, elaborate decorations or fancy themes. If someone offered to throw me a sprinkle then I would accept. But no gifts! I threw a sprinkle and on the invite we were very clear that gifts were not expected. (I know not everyone expects gifts and would be happy without, etc. but let's face it people hear shower and think gifts.)
