She sounds super lazy. She just wanted to get rid of it and didn't want to lug it back to her car. I would have gone inside and told the manager what she was doing. If she's doing it in front if the store they have a right to know anyway, IMO. I wouldn't have said anything to her directly, especially if I was with my LO.

She probably thought the recall was sort of exaggerated.. Some of then are, to be fair (like the bumbo seatbelt thing...) I doubt she meant any harm, although she sounds like a selfish nutcase.

I think it is the parents' responsibility to find that info especially if it's a secondhand item.

I think I would have gone back inside and let the manager know that she was doing that, and then let him deal with it, if he could. She can very well go somewhere else and give it away, too, so not sure how much anything would stop her.

I totally get the parent's responsibility in due diligence...but the reality is that not all parents WILL do that, and this woman was knowingly putting a child potentially at risk. I think that we do have a responsibility as human beings to do the right thing, even if it is inconvenient for us. Does a child deserve to get hurt because a parent isn't educated enough to know that they should research a product? Disclosing that it had been recalled would be one thing, but she didn't, and I do have a real problem with that. I didn't say anything because I didn't hear the entire conversation...she very well could have after I walked away. I usually try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but this situation just really irked me.

@Mae: this exactly! not the same situation, but i've bought stuff off of craigslist, and some parents threw in free items they no longer wanted. One of them was this smaller activity cube. I googled it when I got home, found out it had been recalled, took it to Babies R Us, and they gave me a full refund... LOL. So I mean, if you're getting something for your child, you need to do your own research: giveaway or not.

@mae and @mamimami--lol totally agree. Half of the safety recalls out there are because parents are being complacent or not using it properly in the first place.

@mae: @pui: Totally agree. Who knows why it was recalled? You should always supervise your baby in a high chair anyway... I think a lot of recalls are made to protect people who just don't THINK. (Like the bumbo thing... Um, of COURSE you shouldn't put your kid in it, put it on your kitchen counter and then leave the room! DUH!!)

Our highchair is probably a total deathtrap.. the seatbelt doesn't work! But we watch our kid so when she tries to get out, we sit her back down or let her out! But that chair would NEVER be sellable.

I like to think that I would have said something. If LO was with me I probably wouldn't have said something to her (bc she seemed crazy) but I would DEFINITELY have said something to anyone who took it if I saw anyone do so. That is the risk you run getting anything secondhand though. Obviously clothes are one thing but if you buy something that could have any safety implications it's good to trust the person, or at least check it for recalls/expiration.

I likely would have said something to the double stroller dad if he'd taken it. I am a bit forward like that, though, DH hates it. Haha!

If he hadn't and she was still trying to pawn it off, I'd just go take it like some PPs had mentioned. No use trying to argue with her, because she's just going to try to hand it off somewhere else.

Anyone who takes a random baby item from some lady on the street is sort of responsible for their own safety checks IMO. I'd think/hope the parent would take it home and make sure it was fine to use before using it.

Also, I probably wouldn't be that upset because I'd wonder what the safety recall was? I understand and support safety recalls because of course we all want the MOST SAFE EVER thing for our kids. But it seems like a lot of the recalls are for things that are so minor, or for things that are only an issue if the item is used improperly-- that they aren't really hardly a safety hazard at all. They're just not the MOST BEST safe thing possible.

I wouldn't have had a problem with her trying to give it away if she had been upfront about it being recalled and why. I mean, I'd like to know how dangerous it really was before being too mad at this lady. Regulations are strict and things are recalled all the time which are probably not that dangerous. DH's family owns a grocery store and we often end up eating things they're technically not allowed to sell but are perfectly fine to eat, so it could be similar.

But since it doesn't seem she was being upfront about it I think I would as nicely as possible told her she should either tell people the thing had been recalled or leave. If she refused, I would have offered to take the thing (for free) then and just brought it to the dump (if I had space/time).

I probably would not have said something to her directly because I'm not a fan of confrontation. But if she was it offering it to someone as I was passing, I would stop and tell the person I overhead that it was recalled.

Eh, she sounds a bit weird.

it's just like people who try to sell used carseats or crib bumpers or whatever stuff you aren't 'suppose' to use at garage sales. I don't give them a piece of my mind, I just figure if you're not going to educate yourself on what you put your baby in, then it's not my place to let you know.

Plus, the parent who got the high chair could easily call up the company themselves and say they had a recalled chair.

wow, she's got nerve. it depends on the circumstances--there are some unstable people out there and confronting them could lead to something really unpleasant or even dangerous. i think her behavior is somewhat bizarre, which would have made me nervous. i would hope that no one would accept baby furniture from random people on the street.

in any case, i probably would have said something as i was speed walking to my car, like "there's a recall on that high chair" and hustled along so she didn't swing it at me or something.
