Our doula had only been DONA certified for a few months before we hired her. We interviewed several doulas & went with her cause we just clicked from the start. Her pricing was very reasonable as well. She did an amazing job!

We went with a new doula who was working toward her DONA certification--we only interviewed apprentice doulas because of cost. We were her second birth toward certification. She was amazing. If we ever have another baby we will use her again. She was amazing. The key is to interview several people and see who you feel comfortable with.

Definitely. My doula rocked and I was her first post- DONA certification birth.

Definitely. I agree with Indi, personality and how DH and I connect with the doula is far more important than the number of births they have attended...(and actually a friend who is a doula told me this exact thing when I was searching for my doula).

We interviewed 4 doulas with varying levels of certification / experience. Ultimately, we decided to go with the one that was most experienced and also the most expensive. We felt like if we are going to invest in a doula, we might as well have one we have a lot of confidence in. The others just did not give us that reassured feeling. Maybe if it was free I would feel differently but we were still looking at $400 minimum. (Ours is $750 including postpartum.) I haven't delivered yet though so we'll see how I feel after!

If they're DONA certified, I think they have had to attend and report on 3 births, so I'd be fine with that. If their rate was only $100 or so cheaper than a far more experienced doula, then I'd more strongly consider the one that's attended more births.

However, for me it's mostly about their personality and how we (DH/doula/I) get along, followed by experience and then cost, so that frames how I approach the question.

If you were hiring a Doula, would you work with one that was very recently certified? Or, would you feel more comfortable with one that has years of experience?

What about cost? Would that play a role for you?
