If it's a larger class I think you can get away with just inviting a few. The parents will probably figure it's because you knew the kids from somewhere else or just knew the parents better (which is true.) If you're planning on sticking with the center through preschool until K it might be nice to invite everyone just to get to know them. Of course, just do this discreetly. :)

My son only has 8 kids in his class, so we're inviting them all. I don't know what I'd do if it was like 20 kids. I don't think there would be an obligation to invite them all, though.

I don't think there's any obligation. I wouldn't give invites AT the school ... I'd send them via email or in the mail.

A friend of mine is struggling with this right now. We don't know a lot of the parents and she is renting out a play space for the event. She's probably going to just invite the kids her son talks about. I'm not sure how to do it if you don't see the parents at drop off or pick-up, though!!

@Kimberlybee: agree, if you don't invite the whole class, definitely make sure you privately invite the individual kids.

I've been to both kinds of parties and the one with the whole class actually had a good turnout and the kids really did have a lot of fun! We were at a party last weekend with just a few of the kids (mostly just the boys) and it was also nice for a more low key event.

No, I would just invite a few kids that DD wants to invite but I know some schools have a strict no invitation during class or school rule. I've approached parents on my own time during after school hours to hand out the invites. I have never been to a party where the entire class was invited. That would be fun though.

I didn't and we only invited half...only the kids with parents I interact with. I thought our center had a policy about it but they don't!

I want to invite some of DD's classmates to her birthday party, but i wonder if i'm obligated to invite the entire class? There are some kids whose parents i never even met before - does that make a difference?

I've gone to all the parties i've been invited to, and only about 2-3 kids show up.
