We're going to a similar party for a 4 year old in a couple of weeks, but I think it's from 6:00 - 8:00 and parents are staying. I would absolutely do it at 7 and would drop off if I knew the parents fairly well.

I think I started spending the night with friends in 2nd grade, but my parents got to know the other parents first. I won't have a problem with sleepovers eventually with parents that I know well. So far, we've only done sleepovers with grandparents, but my daughter is still young. I don't think anyone wants that many preschoolers in their house overnight. :)

@PinkElephant: Ohhhh you have no idea. Boys at this age, a drop off evening pajama party will tear down my house. We have only done 1-on-1 playdates with boys. Most of them work well in small numbers but even then one of them had spit on the ground in the living room right in front of me, laughed with DS and thought it was very funny (and he's considered a pretty well behaved boy lol -- I had to talk to him sternly afterwards). And then there are ones that I did not dare to invite even for 1-on-1 lol. Of course there are many super parents that can take this on with no trouble, I am not qualified / certified to do so lol. Maybe older...

They won't do LEGOs as a group, they would probably kick balls around the house, or tumbling and doing summersaults, or run around and poking each other's eyes out lol

I have seen girls played. Completely different and I want that :crying: :silly:

@JCCovi: totally understand! I have a two year old and five year in addition to my seven year old, and I’m getting more comfortable leaving any of them just because there are more things for the seven year old where parents aren’t really invited (school trips, sports, etc.)

@Mrsbells: @bhbee: agree it would totally work to have kids who need to get home just skip the movie/mani part. We’re planning to eat early bc my kids will be a hot mess if we don’t, and it gives time for the cupcake sugar high to wear off. Thanks!

@irene: @ALV91711: awww! You won’t get the girly glittery nails/makeup part, but you could totally do it with legos or slime (and maybe a few less kids? Would that help? I have 3 girls so am clueless about boys!)

I’m definitely considering it but I don’t know if I can handle it, haha. The closer friends are so comfortable with each other/me it might get a little nuts!

@PinkElephant: I like the idea of offering a flexible end time for people who need it. The one DD went to was 3 hours I think (maybe 3.5?) ... they did all the fun stuff at the beginning/middle. Then closer to the end the parents needed a break and they wanted to wind everyone down so did a movie with popcorn. That’s something people can do at home pretty easily so anyone leaving wouldn’t miss much. I did let my DD stay up later than usual by about an hour for the party, it was on a weekend.

That sounds like such a fun party. I have boys so I won’t get to experience something like this.

As for the time I think an end time of 8 is fine. Our regular bedtime is 7:30 but we do sometimes break it if something is going on. And being a weekend they can sleep in. But until about age 5 we never broke bedtime since he wouldn’t sleep in.

That is so nice, a nice transition /prelude to future sleepovers, bravo mama!

Nice for the parents too they get a mini date night- I'd drop my child off in a heartbeat! (Wait I have a boy lol)

I do think the end time is a little late (especially if someone has to do a longer drive home, and have to come home and STILL at least brush their teeth if not shower), but you can always offer parents to pick up early however they see fit. So make sure you have the birthday cake earlier.

Why don't boys do things like this? I'd totally steal this idea if I had a girl. I am not brave enough to hosting a boy party in my house at this age

The idea is very cute. In our circles, people don’t really have the sleepover party fear and both of my LOs have been to sleepovers. Maybe you could do the party like you stated and then the two close friends could actually spend the night too? My DD went to an afternoon party a few months ago and she one other child were “selected” to spend the night after the party.

Thanks all, for the support! I'm really excited about this - we've been doing venue parties so far for the most part, and as nice as inclusiveness is, I'm really ready to get away from events where we must spend an insane amount of money to invite the whole class on top of outside friends. I feel like by getting just a few good buddies in our home, I can spend on the details that will really matter to the kids - nicer crafts, food that is specifically what they like, nice goodie bags (I'll buy the girls each their own flip flops, cute sleep mask, etc. since there are just a few of them)...

@Mrsbells: See, this is something I was curious about. My kids are generally all in bed by 8 pm, though the oldest often stays up later reading or pops back down to hang out with us, because recently she's not tired at that time...but I suspect this is on the earlier side for most 7 year olds. For me, that's part of what makes it fun for the kids - but I was curious how many people would feel the way you do and say "No thanks" based on that.

@bhbee: because honestly, what's fun about sleeping with a bunch of other snoring people on someone's hard floor? I agree it's all the good without any of the "meh" parts of a sleepover.

@agold: Haha I would totally be in on a monthly (or maybe twice monthly) kid-swap with friends who had similar aged children where one family does this with the kids while the other parents have a date night!

@erinbaderin: @HappyBaker: yep, I was thinking of this. definitely most of the kids will have camp, so I'd most likely stick to Friday/Saturday.

.@JCCovi: @dolphin: Thanks for your honesty - if you've got any suggestions, can you tell me what I could do that might make you feel okay with your child coming to the party? Is it primarily you being there, or is the time of day a large factor as well? Two of the guests DD wants to ask will be daughters of very good friends, perhaps two people are families we know a little more casually, and another two are random school friends whose parents I haven't met, so I'm trying to figure out how to make this work for all groups! :)

@Madison43: Yes, my 4-turning-5 year old went to a very cute Pjs & pancakes AM party this year. I loved it, and feel that doing it in the evening with "older" activities ups the cool factor for slightly older kids!

@lindseykaye: Agreed, especially because I'm a pretty strict parent myself, so my daughter is often the one who isn't allowed to do something! That's why I'm asking about time - I'm sure that her two closest friends would be allowed to stay later, but I don't want to make anyone feel bad/have parents have to drag over tired kids away before a movie is over, etc.

@PinkElephant: my daughter turns 7 this month. The party you have mentioned sounds fun but is a lot later than we are used to and runs into her bedtime. Ideally my kids are getting into bed by 8pm ish.
I am not ok with sleepovers or parties where I am not there. To be honest I also don't like house parties if I am not already close to the family. I feel more comfortable in a party place because it is designed for that purpose and hopefully won't have any surprise safety issues like improperly secured pools, aggressive dogs and guns left out of a safe.

We did exactly this for DDs 6th birthday and everyone dropped off, even the parents I didn’t know. It was a huge hit because they stayed up “late”. We called it a pizza and pjs party, and did pizza, ice cream sundaes, and everyone brought their sleeping bag to set up for the movie. The only thing that was a little hard was only my kids and one other actually wanted to watch the movie, the rest just wanted to play in our playroom, and I wished I had a back up activity for them because 3 hours of unstructured play was loud haha.

I had my first sleepover bday for my 7th birthday and I remember it so well  Everyone who was invited came except someone who was out of town. No one’s parents had a problem. I’d be totally fine with this, especially because like you said it’s a few close friends.

@PinkElephant: Yes, I would let my DD go to this and I think you might be surprised how many other parents will say yes too! Great idea for a fun party and good way to compromise with your DD
