That contraption looks so scary - like the baby would suffocate (plastic bag covering face) even though I know s/he wouldn't. Natural instinct I guess. If it was the safest option, I would.

Lol at fully clothed. I have no idea how forceps, vacuum, etc work but trust the medical staff, so i would probably do the same for this.

ETA after four hours of pushing they could have offered almost anything and I would have said yes!

@Bookish: Oh no! Hopefully he can forget about it soon! I don't think its too bad for DH anymore, since it has been 19 months. But those first few months were rough for both of us!

@KT326: My husband is still traumatized by the forceps too. No joke, he got upset in a grocery store because they were selling salad tongs that he said looked just like the forceps :(

Very interesting! My knee jerk reaction to the picture was "NO," but honestly, my doctor used forceps to try (unsuccessfully) to get G unstuck, and it did a lot of damage to her poor head.. this looks like it wouldn't be as traumatic to the baby... I'll be really interested to see what happens with this.

It would depend on my doctor's opinion. Our doctor gave us a choice of either forceps, vacuum or c-section. I chose to have a forceps assisted birth based on his recommendations and my poor husband is still traumatized by it. After our son was out we found out the cord was around his neck and there were two knots in it which was preventing him from coming out on his own.

I read the story and think it is amazing. The goal I think is for it to be used in poor countries where women who don't have access to skilled medical care. On many cases these women would end up losing the baby and risking their lives as well. It sounds like this could really reduce maternal mortality...

i was just reading about this. from the little bit i read, a lot of doctors are thinking it is safer than forceps or a vacuum. if that was the opinion of my doctor i guess i would.

If it's safer than a vacuum or forceps, sure. I made the mistake of reading the NY Times Facebook comments on this. I ended up laughing too much about how people got on the fact that the baby is clothed in the picture.

I'm assuming it's to be used in place of forceps?
