I went to school with a girl, both she and her sister had their ears pinned back and I never though anything of it. I guess I dont really consider it a major surgery?? So short answer, yes, I'd let her do something like that.

i wish you were my mom lol I have ears like the girl you mentioned and always tried to think in my head of how I could fix them. I got called alfalfa ears growing up and I cried over it a lot. I refused to wear my hear up or in a ponytail until I became an adult. I do now because I try to choose not to care.
It was so bad as a kid that I was in denial that I would EVER get married because I believed that no guy would love a girl with big fat elf ears that stuck out :(

As much as I wished and hoped and dreamed and prayed that LO wouldn't get my ears... he did. EVERYONE comments on them - sure they're cute now, he's six months old. But I worry about him as he gets older and I'm undecided on what I will do. He is a boy, so it may be easier for him??

@ashleyt: I'm so jealous right now. My parents never would have even considered it and to this day they think I'm crazy/stupid for "making a big deal" out of my ears.

I had the same situation - was teased at school for my ears sticking out and finally convinced my parents to let me have surgery to pin them back before 9th grade. I don't regret it at all and am so glad my parents let me do it before high school. I've never had a desire to have more plastic surgery or other cosmetic procedures. I wear my hair in a ponytail pretty much every day and I can't imagine how time consuming it would be to style it to cover my ears all the time!

My ears stuck out as a child and I had the surgery to pin them back when I was 12. My parents never mentioned it as an option until I came home asking about it, but then they were very supportive and I'm so grateful for that! I have quite fine hair so my ears stuck through that and there was nothing I could do to hide them. There are so many insecurities girls have about their bodies as teenagers that you can't necessarily change and I'm so glad I was able to fix this one. To me it wasn't about giving in to the bullies, it was about me feeling better about myself. If my daughter has my ears, I think I'd handle it the same way my parents did.

@MrsBee: Did you read the part of the story that said that the child went in to have her ears pinned back and the SURGEON talked her in to having a nose job and a chin reduction?! It sickens me that any adult would TELL a child that they should have any work done.

I don't have children yet and I was not really bullied as a child, so it's hard for me to say for certain how I'd react if it was my own. What I do know, is that it's hard enough to teach children to love themselves as God made them..... giving in to teasing and allowing them to change the way they look seems like it would make it even harder. But I can't imagine how hard it would be to see my child suffer because of teasing.

My ears stick out some, and my brother called me Dumbo growing up. My uncle actually got his ears pinned back (I guess it runs in the family). I wish my ears did not stick out but whatevs...I lived. I think the real problem lies with the kids doing the bullying, and education and strategies need to be directed at that. I work with a lot of kids who have autism and are bullied...but there's no quick fix for that.

@Mrs. Bee: I think having plastic surgery is just giving in to bullies. What if they are being bullied about something that cant be changed such as hair type, skin color, accent, economic status, or sexual orientation. You would still have to find a solution.

Depends what the surgery would be and how they feel about it. If it's something like a big nose, I would want to wait, because sometimes kids grow into their faces. But a large facial birthmark or large disfigurement, I would probably agree to seek cosmetic surgery for

Yes.

I agree with @Jedeve in that it is hard to know what you would do when it's not your child that is being (negatively) impacted by bullying or who is dealing with the situation.

I also agree with @MrsBee's comment that bullying can be just as detrimental to a child's quality of life as a physical deformity.

Nope. I guess that's easy for me to say as I never experienced extreme bullying. But I just don't think plastic surgery is the answer. It just reinforces the bully's taunts by validating the idea that they need to change their physical appearance in order to be accepted. And I think plastic surgery is a decision they should make on their own when they are a legal adult who is paying for the procedure themself.

It depends on what the surgery was, and I don't think we'd do it until s/he was a teenager.

I have a close friend who had his ears pinned at 16. It's not a very big procedure, and it greatly improved his confidence, so I think that was the right move in that situation.

I got my Moms nose and she always encouraged me to get a nose job as a teen. I was too scared of having surgery though, but during cheerleading practice one day I fell and broke it so we just went to a plastic surgeon who made it look perfect :)

I would allow his/her ears to be pinned back. I know a few friends of mine who had their ears pinned back when they were in elementary school and it made a world of a difference for them. I would never ever allow my daughter to get a boob job though. I feel like anything to enhance their "sexuality" is a no no for me!

No never because they are being teased. So many super models now were teased and made fun of for their looks and are now making money based on those same looks. Surgery is never the answer. I would only do plastic surgery on my kid if they had an actual deformity

It would depend on the topic at hand, I know first hand how cruel kids can be & what it's like to be teased. However I don't want to teach my child that outer beauty is all that matters either, so I would have to take the situation in and go from there!

depending on the circumstances (i.e. how miserable the child was, how old he/she was), yes, i would allow my child to have plastic surgery. i would prefer to wait until they were at least 16 (okay, that's a bit arbitrary), but overall i'm not opposed to it. my friend's sisters both had nose jobs and they seem emotionally healthy to me (i.e. didn't turn vain or don't love themselves)!

I read the story and there is NO way I'd even consider it, esp at that age (14?)... NO WAY.

They're so impressionable, and while it would break my heart that I couldn't stop the bullying; I would hope to love them enough and teach them that life isn't always easy, but that you get through it and you come out an even better person for every trial that God puts you through...

I guess I am a super idealist but I would try to help him love himself no matter what. More than the risks of the surgery I would see risks that he would think he needs to change something about himself to be OK. Especially when they're at such a young age and forming their ideas about the world. But, that's easy for me to say because I don't have any physical issues that got me teased (any more than normal) and neither does my son.

I would if it was affecting her life. When I was in fourth grade I had developed a bump on my nose and people were beginning to tease me about it and I cried every day. My mom later in my life told me that if it didn't fix itself, she would have asked me if I wanted a nose job when I turned 16. Luckily, it did fix itself and I actually LOVE my nose and think it's one of my best features.

No I wouldn't... So many things can go wrong with surgery... Children are especially susceptible. I don't think the risks would be worth it.

I would say that unless it's life threatening condition, I don't think I would. Apart, from the physical, there are so many things kids can make fun of each other. I wouldn't be able "fix" everything to prevent teasing.
