@sarac: My mom usually speaks Korean to him. But for some reason she thought she would proactive and teach him numbers in English. She said she didn't think her accent was that bad. umm...ok mom...

Sooo cute, she is just trying to help it sounds completely harmless :)

I say as long as he hears English other places (like you) he'll be fine!

Your child will hear it the right way a million other places, and one person won't undo that. Even two parents who speak accented english would still raise a child who spoke like a native - because they hear the 'correct' way much more frequently.

ETA: and you should totally just ask him to speak her language - if that's not english, than the more he hears it the better he'll learn it.

@banana: It's very common for kids exposed to more than one language to be speech delayed... all good!!

@Andrea @chopsuey119: I have a few friends from high school that were born and raised in the States but they have slight accents. So weird! I asked them if they only spoke their native language at home and they said "no"! I was starting to think it was kinda genetic or something!

@mrbee: I spoke to my mom about this just a few minutes ago and she said she agreed that she should just stick to speaking Korean to him. He's already speech delayed and I think it'll just confuse him even more!

@mrs.cowgirl: Our speech therapist said the same thing about compartmentalizing languages. It's so hard though because my husband and I speak konglish to each other! We try to stick with just 100% korean since that's what my LO is used to, but it's hard!

nope, i wouldn't. i've specifically asked my mom and my in-laws to only speak to lil' CB in korean. while kids are language learning machines and can learn in spite of many things, if you want him to learn korean at all, have your mom only speak to him in korean. i think learning multiple languages is much easier when it can be compartmentalized -- which is why dual language immersion programs are successful. in other words, if your child understands that he can *only* talk with grandma in korean, he'll learn it more quickly because there is a need for it.

my mom and in-laws still slip into english with lil' CB and is hilarious and tick-inducing at times! i feel so badly when i nag them to please speak korean, but it's because i want him to learn korean so badly!

I don't think it will really be a problem, but why not encourage her to teach him Korean instead? He will definitely learn English, from you, school, everything, but if you don't make an effort, it will be a lot harder for him to learn Korean. Plus then you don't have to tell your mom not to teach him English, just focus on that fact that she really is the best teacher of Korean for him.

@chopsuey119: Haha yah, sounds a lot like my situation! Well the other wrinkle was, I was an identical twin and we had our own language that we used. So we didn't even use English a lot growing up.

It's a miracle I can even speak de Engrish.

I should note that growing up, I only really spoke to my mom (an immigrant)... my dad was quiet, and I wasn't allowed to really watch TV. Plus I only moved to America when I was between 3 and 4. And in the afternoons, I didn't play with other kids because I was practicing piano/violin.

So as a result of all that, I did develop an accent and had to go into speech therapy when I was in elementary school to fix it. The saddest part was that I couldn't tell that I had an accent. My accent sounded great to me, haha!

Anyway that being said though, if your LO has regular access to a lot of unaccented English... they should totally be fine! The concern is when the primary language they hear is accented, and they don't hear much of anything else...

@mrbee: my cousins were born here but grew up in ktown. They have a Korean accent when they speak English. It's terrible. My cousin was telling me how embarrassed she was when her English teacher asked when she came to America. -.-

So cute! It was the same with my mom. The few English words she knows is spoken with an accent. It was a non issue for us since we don't see the grandparents that often. And my mom speaks mostly Chinese to him anyway.

Lol I wouldn't let her teach him English. My aunt used to speak to my nieces in her Korean accented English and I think it jacked them up. They spoke with an odd accent for a while. not sure if its been corrected since i havent talked to them in years. You guys should speak to him in English and have mom handle Korean!

I don't know anything about how kids learn languages but I always wondered why some ABC's have accents but others don't. We all went to English speaking schools so maybe it has something to do with the home environment?

My whole family speaks English to but I couldn't help but laugh! this is too cute. I wish I had someone in my family that could teach my baby something other than English! My SIL speaks fluid Spanish and I'm jealous that her babies are learning both English and Spanish. I may have to see if she would take students ;)

My mom is determined to help my son say his numbers. So the other day, I overheard her saying "Ok, let's learn numbers. This is OOONE, SOOO, SUHREE, POH, PIEBUH! (Koreans can't say "F" so they say "P" instead). I started cracking up but then I started thinking "oh crap! he's gonna start saying "five" as "piebuh"!

Poor kid. I told her to stop trying to teach him English. But my husband says he won't know any different because he can't say the sound "f" anyway. And that he'll probably say it with a P. But I still think he needs to hear it the right way. Right?
