I grew up in a ranch style home and hate living in a 2-story house because of the stairs! I have a fear of stairs because of my depth perception issues and fell down the stairs a few times pretty badly. I'd gladly live in a ranch style home if it had the square footage.

Pretty much all are ranch style here for energy efficiency. I'd hate to pay the AC bill on a multilevel here in AZ! I like multilevels, but really don't have a huge preference either way.

I have never lived in anything except a ranch. Our current home has a basement though so our first floor is a bit raised which makes me feel a little more safe, but otherwise it doesn't concern me.

My DH prefers ranch to multi-story. He says that since we live in CA, where earthquakes are prevalent, he feels safer in a 1 story home. Also, he says that if you have more than 1 level, whatever you are looking for/need is always on the other level.

We call them 'bungalow' homes here. I totally would live in them. But then again I live in a rural area. I always like the bedroom situated in the most 'private' setting of the house, whatever that means for the house situation.

Yep. Live in one now. Not counting the basement even though it has sliding doors to the backyard. I never feel unsafe. We are going to get an alarm thought just cause DH travels so much.

I like 1 level homes. Stairs in most 2 level houses are too steep, narrow, and unattractive, in my view. Plus, with small children, or older adults, they're a hazard.

The curb appeal of a ranch depends on the occupant's tastes. I've seen some gorgeous ranches and some hideous ones, but thats true of multi-levels, too.

As for security, I feel that the risks are similar and dependent on your neighborhood. In other emergencies, like a fire, I'd feel safer in a 1level, because there is a greater likelihood that you could safely escape on your own.

I've lived in a ranch house nearly my entire life. The only time I haven't is in this current house - which is a one story but not a ranch style - and when I was living in a dormitory for college. The new house we're hoping to move into is two stories and I'm in your reverse situation. I don't see how I'm going to be able to sleep at night knowing someone could break in downstairs and come upstairs! With a one story house, you hear everything. I don't know about a two story house.

I've lived in a ranch, two story, apartment and now a ranch with a bonus room.

I love it! I would always have a security system in any home, I'm not sure where the idea that two or more floors mean you are safer? If your upstairs and someone breaks in, you aren't getting out without a two story jump.

Growing up, I lived in one-story, two-story and split level homes. I will only live in one-story houses that have a split floorplan (master on the other side of the house from the other bedrooms). I just can't do the stairs with my knee anymore. And, with that kind of floorplan, it keeps the noise down as the kids get older.

I've lived in 2 story, ranch, and split level. As a midwesterner all I really care about is that there is a basement (tornado sirens at least a couple times a year). I think there are good/bad things about all styles.

I don't ever want a split level again though, it's so hard with a LO who is starting to learn to crawl/walk when everything is on a different level.

I prefer ranches over multiple level homes. Then again, security has never been an issue in the places that I've lived. When we buy, it'll more than likely be a single level so that my mom could move in with us if she ever needed to. She's in the process of buying a new home now and is only considering single levels since she doesn't want to navigate stairs when she gets older.

We live in a ranch style home and I've never thought about security being an issue. We're looking to buy right now and most of the houses we saw were two story with the master downstairs and the rest upstairs - we thought that with older kids that would be okay, but since we're just starting to TTC it could be difficult to have kids on the other floor.

I only like ranches. DH is the same, which is part of the reason we're having difficulty buying a home. They're more energy efficient, and I can keep an eye on kids when they're playing in their bedrooms easier. Plus, with our dogs it gives them more space with it spread out.

We don't have security issues because of the dogs...they're both large and very loud when anyone comes near the house. It's the best alarm system we could ask for. :)

I prefer ranch for a couple reasons 1) I have really bad knees, so going up and downstairs is difficult and 2) I like the idea of having my kids on the same level when they are young. Security isn't an issue with me in the area we will be living.

I live in one at the moment and I have never thought about security! I hardly ever even remember to lock the doors... It truly isn't a concern in my neighborhood. I've left the garage door wide open overnight at least twice haha
