I would never; as much as I like our doctor and the whole group, most pediatricians are still on the CIO bandwagon... So I wouldn't expect much help from them.

DD wasn't a good sleeper till like 9-ish month either, and even when she is, like you said, something always comes up!

If I'm really desperate I guess I would look into sleep consultants.

Honestly, some kids just have low sleep needs. I learned after fighting it with my first, it wasn't worth driving myself any crazier over, than the sleep deprivation was already making me. My 3 year old hasn't formally napped period in about 6 months, and before that even as an infant did 45 minute naps most of the time. My almost 2 year old didn't daytime nap at all between 12 and 18 months, and now does sometimes, rarely longer than an hour. Both are up by 5:45 AM, and won't go to sleep at night before 7:30-8:30. They both still night wake often, and the littlest still needs to be rocked to sleep.

I have tried everything, and I finally just embraced that just like adults, everyone has different needs, and I stopped reading the things that say how much sleep a child "should" get, at any given age. Yes, I'm tired, but it's a season. Hang in there, I feel your pain!

I also agree that most pediatricians are not sleep experts. In fact, ours gave me a business card of a sleep consultant when I was sitting in the office, crying from exhaustion! (LO was about 3 months at the time and we were there for a well check).

I have, and they had a lot of resources available that I didn't know about. When we moved to the US, we ended up in a practice that had a sleep consultant on staff, but we never used her.

I'm not sure if a pedi could do much unless there was an underlying medical issue disrupting LO 's sleep. I actually consulted with a "baby whisperer" when my big girl was 6-7 months old and although it wasn't a magic bullet she did give me some suggestions that helped with the sleep. And FWIW, I started nursing my girl down for all her naps and night sleep and she transitioned away from nursing to sleep and night feeds at eighteen months without any tears and on her own timeline. It was a very gentle process and my life became much easier and calmer once I just gave in to it! Hang in there!

Would call a sleep consultant over the Ped in this scenario. But agree with others that you might need to reset your expectations. My LO is a rockstar sleeper but had wake ups regularly between 4 and 10 months. This is normal and may have to do with how much food intake is happening during daytime. I would still occasionally night nurse LO when she was 9 months.

Hang in there. Your LO WILL eventually sleep through the night!

Couldn't hurt but just FYI I noticed a lot more sleep disturbances between 9-11 months and it seemed pretty common in my birth month club, even among those of us who had sleep trained STTN kiddos. So sleep training and consultants could be useful but it could be a rough phase too.

No advice, just solidarity. I have an 8mo old who always wakes up 35-50m after going to bed for the night. Then he's up again 90m-2h after that, then usually 2-3 more times overnight.

I wouldn't becUse I don't feel they are experts on sleep by any means. 2x a night at 9 months is normal as much as it sucks. If rocking to sleep at nap is what works then I'd keep doing that. I might also try moving nap time up if you thought no he's overtired. Or maybe transitioning to one nap if he isn't doing well on 2 naps. Hang in there! They will eventually all sleep!

My ped was not super knowledgable about sleep, and when we said DS wasn't sleeping through the night her advice was to read Weissbluth.

If you're really desperate I'd go the sleep consultant route. Also, keep in mind that babies need to eat a lot during the day to STTN. Mine didn't until 9m when he really started taking off with solids.

Just called Monday to go over my toddlers lack of sleep lately. A nurse took my "story" or whatever you'd call it and brought it to him, gr his advice down and called me back.

@BeachMama: my husband is a pediatrician in residency and I have not seen them get a lot of training on sleep issues beyond medical concerns like sleep apnea. I think a sleep consultant would be a better use of your time, unless your ped has a special interest or training in sleep. Good luck!!

What's your pediatrician like? With our old one, I wouldn't because I don't think he would have been helpful. Great with medical advice, just don't think I'd have gotten much from him on this issue. But our current one I'm sort of obsessed with and WOULD take her advice so I'd be more inclined to. But I also strongly considered a sleep consultant with C (basically as soon as I am ready to take drastic measures and pay for it, the issue would resolve itself).

Long story short - my 9 month old has always been a crappy sleeper (overnight and naps) and I'm kind of at my wit's end. I don't really know what I expect the doctor to say, but I'm contemplating making an appointment to discuss sleep. Or paying a sleep consultant to help. I really just want someone to tell me what to do.

FWIW - we did CIO a few months ago and it worked....for a few weeks. Then he got sick, and the holidays came, etc. And his sleep has slid back downhill so that he's waking 2x nightly and refusing to nap unless I rock him to sleep. I've let him cry in his crib for naps this week but he never falls asleep. At nighttime, he falls asleep on his own okay but still wakes up a couple times at night
