@regberadaisy: it is definitely not my career goal! I have a degree in journalism, but this job is super convenient (I could walk to work) and since I write the schedule I could write it around my child care availability.

I should also add that we still have money to pay our bills and buy groceries, gas, diapers, etc., just not extra money for saving a bunch or trips/vacations etc.

Oh, and LO is 2 months!!!

I really appreciate all the feedback, thanks guy!

With an older LO, I would go back. Granted, my LO is nearly 13 mos, but for the right job offer, we will speed up the weaning process! I am not going to stress myself out pumping at this stage.

I would say that it depends on the age of your LO. If your LO is an infant (like 3 months and under), I would say to keep breastfeeding! No amount of money can replace good health. But once you're past the infant stage, I think mixing formula + breastmilk would still provide many benefits for your baby. Plus having the extra money would suuuure come in handy!

For financial reasons yes I would go back to work. In this case I would rather have money to support and help out my family. If you can get a nice freezer full of extra and supplement when needed. Pump right before you leave and right when you get home, adjusting the times now you pump to hopefully spread it out some. Or if someone is helping out but leaving early, take that time to run back and pump quick before they leave for the day.

Have you thought of pumping in advance of going back to work to build up a freezer stock so that your LO can continue to have bresatmilk while you are back at work if your supply diminishes?

FWIW, I've gone 6 hours w/o pumping a few times (in the night usually) and my supply is fine - when that happens I will get in a few extra pumps during the day (go 2 hrs between instead of 3). I produce more than enough for DS still.

That's great your job wants you back! Good luck w/ whatever decision you make!

I think if working would make you a happier mommy then yes, but you wouldn't necessarily have to give up BF entirely. I have known people who never pumped and didn't have any problems with supply being away from their LO for that long (or longer).

I go longer than 6 hours without pumping quite often and it hasnt really affected my supply that much. So you never know. If you wanted you could pump whenever you get the chance and then supplement with formula so that way you get some breastmilk rather than none at all

If we really needed the money and there was no way for DH to bring in extra then I'd go back & do my best to pump so that DD could still exclusively get bm (her m/s/n/e intolerance makes any formula we get for her very pricey).

We've kind of been in that situation with what I do, but DH was able to bring in overtime a few times a month which makes up for what I'm not bringing in.

You have to do what works for you. =)

I think in your scenario I might try looking for another job. I hope you don't take this the wrong way but unless your career goal has been to be a barista then this is not a career job to you. Rather, it's a paycheck. So why not try looking for another job that won't put you in a position where you wont be able to pump for 6 hours regularly?

@Mrsdaredevil: I wouldn't give up breastfeeding for a job, but I don't think you have to either. If you want to work, I think it's totally doable to pump before and after and alter your supply so that you still get the same amount. You may need to add in an extra pump when you're home, either in the morning or evening, but it should even out eventually and adjust to your schedule.

I guess I would question, if you were alone in the shop, what happens if you need to use the restroom? Surely you step away for a minute or two.

Also, what about if the shop is empty? Could you just put on a nursing cover and pump, watching for any approaching customers? I strategically wear clothing that is easy to pull down to pump, so if I could see someone coming, I could easily stop, put the pump down, and pull my shirt back up within about 5 seconds. Ideal, no, but could be done if needed.

@brownie: This is very true.

For me--it would only be worth it for a job that paid $40k/year and included daycare.... That's my cutoff.

NOW, for going 6 hours without pumping... I have gone that long twice a day and have no issues with supply. But I have also not gone back to work. When we had tons of family over and I was still breastfeeding shy, I would breastfeed and pump in the morning and evening (and sometimes pump at night, too, after breastfeeding), and then only bottle feed while we had company.

If this arrangement makes you LESS stressed (more money=less stress?) then do it. If it would make you more stressed (less time with baby=more stress? less time to pump=more stress?) then don't do it.

Make yourself a list of pros and cons. Take some time to really think about it. And is the place really around the corner? How much sleep would you get if you can't take any daytime naps? How much better would you feel about yourself working? Or staying home?

Depends on the age... I know your daughter is about 8 weeks now, so she obviously eats ever 3ish hours still. But my son is 4.5 mos and he can go up to 4 hours without eating. Last night I went to a bachelorette party for a friend; I fed DS at 4pm, and since I was so busy the whole time I forgot to pump! I got home at 11pm, but he was sleeping, so I went to bed - and he woke up to eat at 1:30am. So I went 9+ hours without pumping and though I was engorged, it all worked out. Then when I DO pump I can usually pump 6+oz as opposed to just 3-4oz. So it all evens out. If you just keep drinking water, your supply should stay the same. And make sure you are pumping that extra bit if you got 6+ hours.

I think you could totally do it!!!

Personally, I wouldn't give up BF'ing before a year for a job unless we really couldn't make ends meet.
We are definitely struggling now (there is literally nothing leftover, even to save) - but I know I couldn't make enough to pay for childcare and especially if I had to give up BF'ing.

I think it also depends on your little ones age. An older baby can go much longer steepen feeds so you can to. Also, babies sleep at night. If you make "night" your 6 hour work period it shouldn't be as much an issue. Of course you will have to pump through the night. And you can always ask what the options might be for you at the job. I think you need to do what is best for you. Working makes me a better mommy.

I have not been working since December (I was put on bed rest during my pregnancy and then had a baby). I was managing a small coffee shop/wine bar/cafe close to my house. Well, I got a call from my boss yesterday asking if/when I want to come back. I would really love to because a)not only do I miss working but b)we have been super short on cash and it would nice to be able to start saving again. However, because the cafe is so small there are times in the day I would be working alone and therefore I would not be able to pump. I would have to go 6 hours without pumping, which I am pretty sure would have a great impact on my milk supply (or at least make me extremely engorged).

What would you do? Would you go back to work and risk not being able to BF your baby, but have the extra money? Or would you wait to go back to work until baby is 1 year (or you're done BFing) and be "poor" during that time?
