He wanted to go to Puerto Vallarta and stay at an all inclusive resort. I wanted to stay at a condo in Hawaii, rent a car, cook in room but still eat out, purchase our drinks at Costco or the likes, have leisure time to explore, etc.</p> <p>We settled on Oahu, condo, jeep rental, kitchenette, a couple activities booked through Costco and Groupon (don't forget about Groupon!). We stayed in Wailea and just drove up to Lahaina for a day, so we weren't so focused on going to the beach. I'd guess you could walk to the closest one in about 20 minutes? There are some great beaches that are a short drive away, which is fine if you have parking at the condo, though you have to pay for parking in some lots IIRC. We just booked the Beloved Resort in playa mujeres since will be going with LO next month, and its a boutique resort. We did this last year (with the kiddo too and not Hawaii). We ate in for breakfast and lunch most days and did dinner out. Lunch was easy peasy sandwiches and fruit and chips. Breakfast was either cereal or eggs. DH enjoys cooking so it's not really a big deal to him. Also, since we were at the beach it was nice to be able to do laundry and not bring all the sand back with us. We splurged on a couple nice dinners but otherwise mainly ate on the cheap. I'd go with option #1 but plan to eat dinner out a couple nights and cook at home a couple nights (if it's only two of you, there shouldn't be THAT much cleaning). Get cereal and fruit and hard boil some eggs for breakfasts, and sandwich stuff for lunch. Heck, if you're feeling really lazy, get some disposable dishes, haha. And it has beautiful, serene pools.
