Thanks all, now to convince DH! A la the mental load posts since this will fall to me I’d much rather deal with it all at once!

Well our older fridge, probably 12 years or so old, just had a hose break and leak water all over the kitchen. I noticed it really quickly and we mopped up the water and there is still a fair amount of damage to the wood floors. So, I’m team replace it now if you can before something goes wrong. We have an even older fridge in the basement (not connected to water) and I love having the extra fridge/ freezer space.

@Umbreon: This :) What's better than when your kids are in middle school and their friends come over to raid the garage fridge for cans of Sprite.

I would replace both so that they match and I only have to deal with one delivery fee!

Do you have a garage? My parents put their old fridge in the garage to use as a second fridge and have had it for 7 more years and it still works. They unplug it in the winter and use it as a freezer

But I'd probably replace both. You might get a good deal.

I wouldn’t. Older fridges work better and last longer. We are on our second fridge on top refrigerator in 10 years. They don’t last as long anymore and have so many gadgets in them now stuff breaks all the time. Our current one is a French door Samsung, is 4 years old and already had 2 things break.

We just did. Ours was starting to become finicky with frozen spots and some water leakage from the freezer so we just replaced. In your case, I totally would. The delivery guys removed it and all their old stuff is broken down and recycled as best they can (so they say) which made me feel better. We also had our chest freezer recently die and it was only 8 years old. I had someone in to see about fixing it but it was gonna be $300+. I posted it on my buy nothing in case someone was handy to fix it themselves and had someone come get it later that day.

@HappyBaker: we had the same thing happen over the summer and ended up replacing both at the same time. I wanted them to match and we ended up getting a better price than we would have if we bought them separately.

I would. It’s probably not very energy efficient either at this point.

We had to replace our fridge in August due to it not working. It wasn't too big of a hassle - we borrowed coolers from friends and used dry ice & ice, and for a new fridge in a couple of days. HOWEVER, I think I Remember reading multiple times that it's 10 years old or more, it's a good idea to replace rather than repair. I know you're not in a situation of needing repairs, but just sharing what I read. If you can financially afford it, and you have the time to deal with switching things over, I would do it and then donate your fridge via a local FB group or OfferUp.

I was going to say no way at first, but after reading the facts, I totally would. DH and I are very frugal, but both of us WOH and often convenience beats frugality. Especially because I have no desire to meet a delivery person twice. I'd try to haggle for a multi appliance discount!

If you can afford it I would do both as well. A friend had her fridge die and it was a pain to move everything to coolers until a new fridge could arrive (which took a week, then it was the wrong one and she had to wait another few days!). She was lucky that she was on maternity leave and her parents live with them so they didn't lose any food!

With how old they both are if you can afford it I would just replace both. Seems like less hassle and then you could get something matching.

We need a new dishwasher as our has stopped doing a good job cleaning and one part recently broke that is cost prohibitive to replace. In doing research on our current appliances (they were here when we moved in), I found that the fridge and dishwasher are both 17 years old.

Is it crazy to just replace the fridge now too even though it’s working fine? The idea of having it die and being without a fridge is super annoying, and we’re already going to be dealing with delivery/install of the dishwasher, we could just do them both at the same time? We already replaced the oven a few years ago so these are the last two we will need to replace.
