I'm not sure how long he'd be able to hang on, but I think I would call in for back up. Or in the case that I wasn't a detective, I would call 911. I could never physically pull a grown man up from hanging, and I wouldn't want to put my life in danger. I'd let the professionals handle it... if they got there in time.

I wouldn't hesitate to save him. I could never let someone die in front of me. I would do everything I could to make sure he was convicted though.

@Rubies: The guy would fall a great distance... let's call it 5 stories. So the guy would probably have a 99% chance of death or serious injury if you don't save him.

@MrsTiz: Well in this case, the detective would be killing through inaction... not through action. It would probably be a lot easier not to save someone who is about to die, then to kill them in cold blood? I haven't done either yet though, so will have to get back to you on that one.

I am a nurse and have treated people that have been convicted of terrible terrible things. But no matter what I think about what they did it is not in my hands to make that decision. I would save them and let them get their punishment form someone greater than me. I do believe in God, heaven, and hell so that greatly affects this choice. Even if nobody would know what I had done, I would know it and it would ruin me. If they went on to kill other people, that would make me need serious counceling though:(

Hmm, tough one. I am very very pro-death penalty, but I personally wouldn't commit the murder of the killer because what would that make me? A killer. I would like for him to be punished the way he delt with his own victims, which is by death, but I couldn't pull the trigger myself because i'd have to live with that.
I can't stand "life in prison", the biggest waste of money, ever.
Good question!

If I don't help him is he guaranteed to die? If I had backup, I'd save him. If it were just me, I might just kinda let him go. I don't know!

I just started watching this show Luther, and in the opening scene the detective has a chance to save the life of a serial killer.

If he saves his life, then the serial killer will go to trial, may be convicted, and will spend the rest of his life behind bars (no capital punishment in Britain). There's always a chance though that the serial killer won't be convicted, or will escape or be paroled... and may kill again.

If he doesn't save his life, then the serial killer dies and assuming he was guilty, his victims get instant justice. Of course if he wasn't guilty, then the detective just served as judge, jury and executioner.

Ok so here's the situation from the opening scene of the show. The detective is convinced that someone is a serial killer, confront him and they then reveal information that only the killer (or someone close to the killer) could know. Then the person falls through an old wooden plank on a bridge and is hanging on for his life.

Assuming that no one would know either way and that you were the detective, would you save the life of the other person?
