But if it meant risking my life, as much as it would tear me up inside, I would not. There's the issue many have mentioned about your family needing you, but for me the other big thing is what @mediagirl said about the pet's lifespan vs yours.</p> <p>DH's dog (who now lives with my ILs instead of us)...not so much. Actually, it has happened - a big dog was coming after us, and thank god nothing happened because it's owner caught it in time. There was a really sad story about several family members who died trying to save each other after a tide came up and swept the dog away. I think given time to think it through, I would not (before or after baby). I love my pets dearly but I don't think I could leave my husband or my family for the sake of a pet. </p> <p>Honestly though, depending on the situation, I may do it without thinking much. Like if he was being attacked by another dog I think my adrenaline would rush in and I would get in the middle to try to save him. Also my husband got mad at me once because our CO detector was going off in the middle of the day and I called the fire department and they told me to get out IMMEDIATELY so I got the dog out but went back in for the cats and spent a good 10 minutes trying to get them out from under the couch (they were scared due to the alarm and hiding) before my husband was on the phone screaming at me to get my ass outside. She was explaining to our class that if her horse and her husband were both in danger she would save her horse first! I was (and still am) horrified by this.
