Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

I have decided to keep her home today and then send her next week. She is probably already incubating it and will no doubt develop symptoms around this time next week, but I would feel awful if I hadn't done everything in my power to prevent my 4 month old from catching it.

That's a tough one. I think I would lean towards sending her. I would rather her get chicken pox before school age when you are on mat leave so that she doesn't contract it in a few years and have to miss school with one parent having to miss work to care for her.

I would be tempted to keep her home but I don't know how long you would do it considering all the potential exposed kids and long incubation period! Fingers crossed she doesn't get it! That's a little crazy they didn't tell you until after the second case...

I'm not sure how to feel about the four month old, but seeing as it's not something that is vaccinated for (i.e., she's going to get it eventually), I'd probably just send her...but keep her from being too much in the baby's face. With such a long incubation period, it seems like kids at school could continue to be contagious for some time anyway.

Since she has already been exposed I'd send her. Better if she gets it to get it now while you are home anyway.

Our whole neighbourhood got it at the same time, I was the oldest at 12 and it sucked. It wasn't nearly as bad for my sister who was only 2.

If it was just E, I would send her. But with a 4 month old at home, I'd keep her home for the week. Having a 3 year old and a baby is hard enough- having a 3 year and an infant with chicken pox would push me past my breaking point. And 4 months is really really young to knowingly expose I think.

That said I haven't slept well in what feels like years so right now I'm camp do whatever it takes to sleep the most tonight.

@coopsmama: I can second this. We (me and my two sisters) each got it sequentially growing up - I am the youngest. I only had a handful of pox - where as my older sisters were much more covered...my mom is so glad she just had a hellish few weeks and got it over with....

Honestly, I'd send her. Maybe she won't get it. And, if she does, it's better to have it young (and while you don't have to take extra time off work) and then she won't have to worry about it (probably) in the future. People totally used to send healthy kids over to play with the kid with chicken pox so that they could get it over with young.

I'd probably keep her home. Everyone at the daycare is incubation- other kids and teachers.

@birdofafeather: Actually, it's much better to have chicken pox as an infant or toddler.
Each year you are older it gets worse in terms of the number of pox you get and if you are feverish, etc. - my two toddlers (3 and 1) just had it this summer and that was true for them! My friend's family had it and her 8 month old fared the best out of all of the children up to late elementary. Typically the older you are, the worse it is, and the three docs we saw between going through my shingles this summer and my two kiddos getting chicken pox from me also told me the same thing.

It wouldn't bother me to send her because, especially as they don't vaccinate for it over there, I would want my kids to be over and done with it asap! It's not fun at all to have as an older child or adult.

i would probably skip this week since it's only part time (as hard as it would be!) so as to give some space between the illness. hoping she doesn't catch anything and everyone else is in the clear!

ETA: we only just vax'd R (3.5) for chickenpox last month. MIL had shingles last year and we had to rearrange childcare/sleepover plans for SIL's wedding because it was at the same time she was contagious. i don't think it's a huge deal to get chickenpox when they're older (DH and I got it in elementary school), but i wouldn't willing expose my toddler/infant!

E goes to nursery Thurs and Fri. Last Thursday, one of her class came down with chicken pox (we don't vaccinate against that over here). Then, on Friday, her class teacher went home with it. That's when they decided to inform parents.

Chicken pox has a 10-21 day incubation period and is contagious before symptoms appear. As yet, E hasn't cone down with it..... and neither has any other child in her class. I decided not to send her today, to try to prevent infection (I have a 4 month old and could really do without two sick children), but I am wondering whether to send her tomorrow. She has already been exposed and could well develop symptoms in the next couple of weeks, even if I keep her home - but perhaps she has dodged the bullet? If I send her tomorrow to play with children who might be incubating it, I'm increasing the risk.....

..... but am I just being paranoid?

I'm on maternity leave so I am able to keep her home without taking time off work. But she LOVES nursery and having both kids home all day is hard work!
