If you're planning on having more kids then yes, otherwise I'm not sure. I would consider cotton diapers (not microfiber); they seem to be better in the heat for my kids and certainly it will be nice to line dry the diapers. A dozen prefolds and a couple covers won't cost too much.

@loveisstrange: yes I was also thinking of trying some cruisers when I finish up this batch. I was thinking that it was the plactic-y material causing it it, which wouldn't help with other disposables. But who knows. Could just be the fit.

@MamaJ: Have you considered just getting a different brand of disposables? It sounds like maybe the Honest diapers just dont fit as well as they used to.

@Freckles: I think more of chafing. I've also wondered about the size. He is in 4s but only weighs 21 lbs. the weight for the 4s says 22-37 or something like that. So not sure.. I could get a small pack of 5s and see if it helps

@MerryC: yeah I was thinking of maybe getting 2 or 3. Thanks for the info

@HabesBabe: we already use honest diapers. Never had a problem until recently.

My friend's son was having major issues with diaper rashes and found that Seventh Generation diapers helped get rid of them. I would try a trial service before deciding to invest in cloth diapers as well.

Also, is it more of a chafing issue than a rash? DD also has a bad rash around the leg holes, but it usually only happens when the weather is super cold and dry. I bumped her up a diaper size and i'm going to see if that helps.

I wouldn't-- have you tried "natural" disposable diapers? The cost for CD at this point would be too high to start at 16 months for me!

If you want to try, I would recommend a pocket or similar style that has the fleece lining over the leg elastic. We stasrted out using primarily flips, but use primarily BG4.0s now because especially in the summer, the more exposed (and more likely to be damp) leg elastic of an insert-cover system was irritating my kids legs like you described. You could always buy like 3 that would get you through a chunk of the day to try it, and it wouldn't be that expensive, and should give you an idea of if it will help. I'd recommend buying new over used, since your lo already has some irritation issues, you don't want to compound that with someone else's potential residues, etc.

@MamaJ: Why not try one of the cloth diaper trial programs? I believe most of them last 3-4 weeks which would be plenty of time to see if it would help with the rash and you wouldn't be out much money if it didn't work. A service might be more economical for you at this point too. I know the one near us does 20% off for the first month which makes it super reasonable.

@skipra: I've tried a bunch of stuff. I did see I had some of that monistat cream for thigh chaffing (used it when I was pregnant for chafing). Right now trying to get rid of the rash first.

@loveisstrange: yikes! yeah it would be a total waste if it didn't work.

I started with a hybrid system of Gro-Via. You can buy liners that you just snap in and then reuse the shell. Flips are the same type of thing but the inserts don't snap in.

I would agree though that a leg rash/irritation probably won't be fixed by CD.

I wouldn't. The up-front cost is expensive. If your LO is already 16 months, it's possible that you'd only use them for 8-9 months.

We quit CDing because of recurring, bleeding diaper rash we couldn't get rid of. Funny, it went away right after we stopped. The leaks, the rashes, the fit issues, the washing and stripping... it was much, MUCH more hassle than it seemed like it was going to be.

I still have my whole stash... and probably won't use them on another LO.

Perhaps you could try a hybrid diaper like gDiapers? You could use the washable outer cover and the disposable insert. Are there any cloth diapering stores in your area where you could rent diapers for a bit to see what you liked or if it got rid of the rash?

Yes, for sure! even though the up front cost of buying a set of cloth diapers is a bit scary, they more then pay for themselves over time! Being in a hot sunny local is awesome, because drying the diapers in the sun is one of the best ways to keep the stains and stinkies away.

Also if you get a high quality brand its usually easy to re sell them when you are done. We use Fuzzi Bunz and I love them. I got a big set of them from a mom on craigslist that had only used them for a few months. And keep in mind you don't have to go 100% cloth, we use huggies overnights at night time since my LO is such a heavy wetter.

CD can be expensive so I would probably only start at that point if I was fairly certain that I was planning on another baby that would also use them. Have you tried other types of diapers or putting some cream with dimethicone where he gets the rash? Kind of like the idea of that stuff you can put on your thighs if they rub together so you don't get a rash?

I personally wouldn't... sometimes I wish I never started CDing...

About the leg rash - L often gets a rash around her leg from the CD rubbing her, so that might not even solve your problem! That's the only rash she gets - no actual diaper rash, but her poor thigh... :(

I don't know if cloth would solve your specific issue, but for us our LO (14- months) has never had a diaper rash since being in cloth diapers. She only ever had a rash in the early weeks when she was wearing disposables (because her cloth diapers didn't fit yet).

Not sure about the cost effectiveness at this point. If you plan on having more kids it probably would save you money!

We live in Arizona so I can relate to your summer heat. We have had no issues with it whatsoever.

DS (16 months) has had a diaper rash for months that I can't seem to get rid of. It seems to be from the edge of the diaper rubbing against his leg.

I'm wondering of cloth would help. But I'm concerned about the cost switching over, our climate (110 degrees in the summer). And if it would really help at all!

Can any cloth diapering mamas give me some advice?
