Yes, this would be one of the reasons for switching practices. I switched my OB/GYN about four years ago for various reasons. When I started with my current one, she was appalled that I hadn't received any HIV testing with my previous doctor. On my first appointment with her, she had me tested and let me know the results within a day. I've been with her and the other doctors in the practice for awhile now and happy with my switch.

@MrsCB: I only met with her once, and she was pretty strange about certain things, like making weird jokes and things like that. All I needed from her was an RX for Synthroid - if it had been for something more serious, I'm not sure I would be happy with her.

Another annoying thing - the office never calls you - not to confirm appts, and not with test results. They send you the results and any b/w or Rx changes in the mail, like 1.5 - 2 weeks later.

@Lindsay05: I agree, although having the education of up to date research and studies is going to help them be more open minded.

I would switch if they didn't seem up to date. Great news about your A1C!

@Shutterbug: Yes, it does! They did tell me at my last appointment there's another doctor in that practice. Did you make an appointment with her? My husband wasn't as bothered by her, but I was holding back tears at the end of the appointment when she was so callous about needing insulin.

@MrsCB: does her last name start with F? I only ask b/c I was referred to an endocrinologist by the same practice for my thyroid.

If you're uncomfortable with her, definitely ask for another recommendation. I did that with a dermatologist once, and my PCP was not offended or anything, she sent me to a different one and it was a much better fit.

Thats a hard one because just because its research doesnt always make it right. I would prefer a doctor who is open minded and makes decision thats best for each patient not because a research study said so.

Oh yes, I would be switching. I research EVERYTHING and I don't want to be arguing with my doctor all the time. It's their job to be up to date, so yes, I expect it of them or I'll switch.

Yeah I'd want someone up to date. I've seen different midwives within my practice for scheduling reason-- I don't think it would be a big deal if you ask to make your next appointment with someone else within the practice. I think we tend to overthink it way more than the doctors at the practice do.

I would absolutely seek a new endocrinologist on the bedside manner alone. I am crazy picky about doctors because I have this reverse problem with authority figures (I take them crazy seriously and have a hard time advocating for myself if I don't agree with them) so in something as delicate as pregnancy and GD, I would not feel comfortable with someone whose personality I didn't jive with, let alone didn't keep up with their research in their field. You need to trust your doctor!!!

Can you ask your OB for any other recommendations other than the endocrinologist they work with?

I certainly can't tell you what to do, but I can tell you that I make sure that my docs are up to date on the latest research. So I had one doc that told me that I could only breast feed for 6 weeks despite research saying that breast feeding was actually protective with my condition. I switched doctors at that point.

No. I want my doctors up to date. It's one of the reasons I like my OB so much. She's told me numerous times, "XYZ is the old way, but new research shows..." and then she follows the newer way.

I am 16 weeks pregnant, and around 10 weeks I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Before I got pregnant, I had been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, so it wasn't surprising that I failed the glucose challenge. While TTC I had been taking a drug called Metformin which helps control blood sugar, but I kind of slacked off after getting a positive.

I got back on the Metformin and had great results. I was able to eat foods that have surprised both the diabetes counselor and my nutritionist. But when I don't take it, I immediately see a jump in blood sugar. I tracked my blood sugar for a few weeks with great results, except for certain days where I did dumb things like eat half a dominos pizza.

However, the endocrinologist I was referred to told me at my last appointment that I need to stop taking Metformin (which BTW is pregnancy category B), that it's typically discontinued after the 1st trimester. She said no one runs studies on pregnant women and that since it crosses the placenta we can't know if it's safe or not. She also had an awful bedside manner and basically told me that I'd almost certainly need to go on insulin.

Then I heard here on hellobee that some doctors let/insist that women stay on it their entire pregnancy. I did some research and was able to find studies that support that Metformin does not appear to have any adverse affects on the mother or fetus.

So I'm kind of ticked off at the doctor and questioning whether I want to continue under her care or not. I feel like she's not keeping up to date with research (which was done in 2005-2011). And I was not a fan of her demeanor. However, she works along with my OB practice and I have no idea how it'll work if I go see someone else.

Oh, and on a side note, I got updated A1c results today and I'm down from 6.5 to 6.0 which is borderline normal!
