Personally? I would definitely keep nursing and pumping, do you have the opportunity to see an IBCLC who could help you work out a feeding plan to increase weight gain? Unfortunately not a lot of pedi's are particularly knowledgeable about breastfeeding or weight gain patterns for breastfed babies.

Also, nursing has a whole host of non-nutritive benefits as well as breastmilk!

I'd stop pumping, and nurse while I was with them. That way they get the benefits of a lot of milk, you get the bonding, and you get to drop the hassle of pumping. Win win win. They're already getting formula, and changing the ratio to a little more of it in favor of you losing the stress of pumping is very worth it, in my opinion.

@WALLAROO: I'm probably not a reliable source, but I say QUIT! I haaaaaated pumping, and quit within a week and a half, so my opinion is probably not useful. They are getting mostly formula anyway, so I'd say BF when you can, and then FF the rest of the time.

@WALLAROO: if you want to drop your pumping, then your body will adjust to only producing when you normally nurse. If you still want to pump, try taking More Milk Plus to increase your supply.

But, if you are tired of it, then I would drop it.

I would probably stop pumping but nurse when I am with them, and top them up with formula afterwards. If pumping makes you miserable then I don't think it is worth your emotional health to keep doing it. Your supply will adjust to missing that stimulation, and since you are already supplementing, if it does drop your babies will just take a little more formula, and you still get the bonding, and the benefits of whatever breastmilk you have to offer them.

I had a similar situation, not with twins, but low supply. It sounds like you enjoy nursing, so keep doing that. Your body will adjust to the times that you feed them, although you will probably see a dip in supply. Since you are already supplementing, it won't be that different if your supply dips, just supplement more. The bonding when you nurse them won't be affected by your supply :-) It is always difficult to decide when to stop, but don't let pumping stop you from nursing (pumping sucks!).

@Arden: "Every little bit helps" is what keeps me going.

I have only been pumping at work for almost two weeks now. What makes it a little more challenging is that I am a consultant who usually works onsite at the client. Luckily this client has a "health room" that I can use at my leisure. I move on to a new client in two weeks and I'm not sure if I will have a room to use.

If I stop pumping during the day would I still have enough of a supply to nurse them in the morning and evenings?

If nursing is working then I would think about stopping pumping. Obviously you need to slowly wean from the pump so you maybe could go a while longer. I would just give the other one a bottle of formula at night and alternate nights who gets to nurse.

At my twins' 4 month appointment, the ped said I just wasn't producing enough milk for both of them and their weight gain wasn't where it should be. After that appointment she told me to tandem breastfeed first and then supplement with formula and to come back for weekly weight checks. In one week they each gained a pound. The following week they gained almost close to another pound each. Now I'm back to work and I tandem nurse in the morning and supplement with formula. Our au pair gives them formula throughout the day. At bedtime, I nurse one baby and DH gives the other baby any milk I pumped at work that day. I pump 3 times a day and am only getting about 6-10 oz. I really enjoy nursing them but pumping at work is so much effort for such little output.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? What did you do?

Should I keep up this routine until my supply completely dries up or should I just call it quits and enjoy the time that I was able to nurse?
