@Mrs. Taco: there are 2 providers at the home daycare. ratio of 1:4, which is the same as our current daycare. The current daycare has 12 babies and 3 teachers in the nursery as well as three other classrooms of older kids in the building.

@Truth Bombs: There is a main morning and afternoon teacher and then several assistants and floaters that are in and out during the day - it is too many! DS had some weird eye goop when i picked him up the other day and no one could tell me when it started.

Regardless of whether we switch him now, we will be moving him to a full day preschool that we LOVE when he is 2. So if he doesn't have a curriculum based setting for the next year, I'm not too worried about it.

I wouldn't if the main reason is for health. I've been talking with friends who recently switched to a nanny, and their son still gets sick just as often!

@catomd00: sorry you had a bad home daycare experience! We looked at several home daycares when we were first searching for childcare and this one was the only one that gave me a really good feeling. I have also gotten great feedback from other parents. The only reason we didn't go with it in the first place was that I was concerned about having a 3 month old in the same setting as much older kids.

@Anagram: I'm glad your daycare switch was for the best. The woman who runs the home daycare we are considering is super organized and really warm and caring which is very appealing to me. Our current daycare always feels kind of crazy and disorganized.

8 kids sounds like a lot to me in a home daycare, is there only one provider? I would probably stay in the center.

My lo was sick for approximately 2 years of her life after starting daycare. I don't feel comfortable with home daycares so that wasn't even an option for us. We just dealt with it and figure now we all have healthier immune systems...

@Meltini: I know he'll still probably get sick but now DS is usually NOT sick for 3-4 days at the most. Every 3 weeks sounds better :bummed:

8 teachers in a day sounds like way too much! My LO has two main teachers, and then two floaters will be in there throughout the day to give the teachers their breaks, but there is always one of the main regular teachers in the room at all times. So that would concern me.

I might start looking for another option, but in home day cares have never been on our radar. I don't feel like there is enough accountability, and they don't offer anything close to the curriculum based learning that our LO gets at a big center. But that's a personal decision.

As far as the sickness, I don't think switching him is any guarantee. He'll still be exposed to lots of other kids and their germs. And honestly, a large center probably has a more organized/intense sanitization process than an in home.

I would just stick with the center you are at. The first year sucked for us with daycare illnesses for LO 1 but things improved a great deal when she was around 13-14 months. LO 2 didn't have the same rough first year at the same center and she started in the fall around sick season.

Home daycares scare me after we had an unfavorable experience, so I probably wouldn't make that switch. There are pros and cons to centers and home daycares. You have to go with your gut instinct on this one. Good luck! I thought daycare was so hard when they were younger, but I think is actually getting more difficult for me to deal with as she gets older.

My LO was in her first daycare from 6 months-1year and then I was off for summer break (I work in a middle school) and after that summer break we decided to start her in a new daycare close to my work (it was $800 cheaper a month, haha).

Even though the decision was mostly financial, the benefit was that I have been WAY more happy with the new daycare. LO has been less sick, but I think that's just because it's her second year and her immune system is better. But the teachers were much more communicative, the teachers seemed slightly more competent....there was nothing "wrong" with her old school, per se.....there were just more crying kids always and teachers seemed slightly less responsive to the crying, and the room was always more disorganized and crazy at the end of the day. These are all "small" things, but the new place has none of those issues and I just feel so much better about it.

LO was fine with the many transitions (daycare to home for two months to a new daycare), but she's pretty good with transitions in general.

Don't count on illness being reduced. My 20 month old has been in daycare for a couple months now and he is sick every 3 weeks like clockwork. There are only 9 other kids at his daycare. Otherwise, I'd make the switch because consistency is important to me.

How will you feel if you move him and the sickness situation is unchanged? It doesn't seem like a guarantee to me that changing the environment will change the health of your child.

Kids are resilient and he will overcome the move. Even without a move he's likely to move classrooms soon'ish at the large center and will have a transition regardless.

DS is almost one (!!!) and has been at the same large daycare center since he was 6 months. It was a rough adjustment for him - he had a nanny before that - but now he loves it. He adores most of his teachers, loves being around the otger kids, and is learning so much. However, there is one big issue and several smaller ones:
The big thing is that he is sick ALL THE TIME and DH and I are sick most of the time. He has had 9! ear infections (he has ear tubes and still gets them).
They are also not great communicators or very consistent with his schedule. There are probably 8 teachers that interact with him over the course of the day.

There is an opening in a home daycare that we've visited a really liked, and heard great reviews of, there are only 8 kids so I think it might help with the illness.

My hesitation is about taking him away from a setting he knows and loves and going through another transition.

What would you do?
