I totally agree with rachiecakes, Arden and runsyellowlites- having someone who supported my personal parenting philosophies was more important. Since the AAP is against cosleeping, follows the routine vac schedule etc I wasn't completely convinced on following their recs anyhow. My pediatrician said that parent and doctor should have the same goal: and healthy, happy baby. And as long as my parenting isn't hindering that, then it's her job to support me. It just so happens though that she was 100% in support of co sleeping and practices it herself with her kids as well as extended breast feeding, baby sign language and alternate vac schedules. And she homeschools! I loooove our pedi!!

So yeah, that was definitely not at the forefront of my mind when choosing a dr.

No I love ours. I have a friend wanting to switch to ours but she's only accepting newborns and doesnt accept patients from other doctors that rotate call. It was a bummer for her!

Same as @runsyellowlites: @Arden: @rachiecakes:

While our pediatrician follows AAP as a general rule, we wanted someone who also read current research, WHO, and my research into consideration.
They are non-pushy re solids, ok with BLW vs rice cereal, pro BFing and ok with our alternate vaccine schedule.

I feel blessed to live in a city with one of the best medical communities in the world. You can easily find any kind of medical professional, traditional/alternative/natural, etc., and delayed vaccinations, breastfeeding, cosleeping, blw, are all very common around here.
Our pediatrician is non-alarmist, he gives recommendations based on AAP and WOH, but reminds us that they are just recommendations and treats DS as an individual.

The only thing he's ever been adamant about is posting the poison control number somewhere visible in case of emergency. I love our pediatrician.

I searched high and low for a pediatrician that followed my parenting philosophy - which means that I take AAP recommendations into consideration, but I also take international studies, WHO recommendations, and my personal research into consideration.

Finding a doctor who understood my feelings on an alternative vaccination schedule, didn't give me grief about cloth diapering (although the nurse did...), supported our family's choice to co-sleep, and had a real support system for breastfeeding mothers (including an IBCLC in his office) was hard, but so very worth it. I love our pediatrician!

Well we don't agree with all AAP recommendations so for us it was more about our pedi having up to date knowledge in our areas of parenting. Ultimately, we switched pedi's because he wasn't knowledgeable enough on breastfeeding & baby nutrition. He got very pushy with solids at 6 months despite P not showing signs of readiness & tried to tell me my breastmilk didn't have enough calories (it has more calories that a number of babyfood veggies... I read the labels)... that and he fired us when we declined the routine fluoride. despite P getting fluoride through my breastmilk.

I prefer someone who would follow AAP recommendations. I picked women pediatricians who were chief residents in their respective programs and who have been out of training between 7-10 years for maximum knowledge base and experience.

Would you switch peds if they didn't follow the AAP recommendations? What would be a deal breaker for you?
