Thank you for all of the feedback! I think I will stay, if you think I can survive the drive. I really like the hospital system that I go to now. Maybe for the next one I will examine other options early on.

I work for a large health system and I wouldn't want to go to a brand new hospital, personally.

I think it doesn't hurt to check it out but a word of caution on using a new hospit...we had a new hospital, where a friend delivered her baby a little over a month after it opened. She had a terrible time trying to figure out logistics before they opened, and then there were minor (non-medical) glitches that delayed some things like billing because they were so new and hadn't worked out the kinks. I delivered at the same hospital 8 months later with no issues.

@Truth Bombs: oh I agree that being in the car with contractions really was awful. But for me it was worth it to be in a hospital that I felt really good about. But again- no harm in checking out the closer place too.

I'll be the odd man out and say I would check it out. The contractions I had in the car on the way to the hospital were SO painful because I couldn't move. I couldn't wait to get the hell out of that car.

Our hospital was also 30-45 minutes from our house (longer during rush hour), but I was never concerned by it. If you like everything else, I don't think I'd switch.

My hospital was about a 40 minute drive my house. We had plenty of time and we ended up going to the hospital around 9pm so there wasn't any traffic.

If this is your first birth it will not likely be a speedy birth.

You should see if you like the hospital and midwife better than your current practitioner. It doesn't hurt. You should do what makes you feel comfortable.

How far along are you? If it's early it couldn't hurt to look, but I go to a practice that's about 30 minutes drive from me because I like them and I want to deliver there (and did for my first). The drive is a short part of the whole labor process.

And I say this as someone who got detoured on our way to the hospital because of stupid construction, with contractions like 4 minutes apart. It sucked. But I'm still so happy I delivered there.

The hospital I delivered at was 40 min away from my house, but my OB was right next to the hospital and where I worked. I say, if you found a place you really like, stay with it. Unless you have a super fast labor (not likely), the 30-60 min drive won't be bad at all.

I go to a midwife practice and I like it. I've been seeing them for a few years and had good experiences. My appointments are just 5 minutes from my house at a brand new facility with the latest technology.
However, the hospital where I would deliver is 30-45 minutes away, depending on traffic, and I stress about the drive while in labor.
A new hospital has gone in 15 minutes away and takes our insurance. They have one midwife on staff and I was thinking about making an appointment, just to check it out.

What do you think? Stay or explor something new?
