@MoonMoon: I am so glad he is doing better.

To all of the pps - I am a nurse practitioner and was a floor RN at one of the large, well respected academic institutions. I would never bring a baby/child to the hospital to visit (unless it was a hospice/death bed scenario). Hospitals have sooo many super bugs floating around. And kids always end up on the floor, which is uber dirty. (I have always found it odd that isolation precautions for the super bugs don't include any footwear covers).

I guess I'm in the minority, but I would go with Dh and LO. The way I see it, if LO is going to catch a cold/flu she may well do that anyway from Dh if he catches it whilst there and passes it on-- or from the many other people she passes on a daily basis.

Update: thank you all for your support last night. There was some talk of him being in the hospital for 48 hours, but he responded well to the antibiotics so he gets to come home tonight! He'll have to keep taking antibiotics for 2 weeks, but our little family will be home together for Thanksgiving, yay!

Thank you everyone! LO is down for a nap, so HelloBee is keeping me company right now.

@PointeShoesTutus: I'm so sorry you've experienced salivary gland infections too, but glad to hear that the treatment is pretty straightforward. I'd never heard of this before today!

I had had multiple salivary gland infections. They're no picnic but after being on the antibiotics for a full day I started to feel much better. Mine were caught earlier than your poor DH's so I got a short drip at the urgent care and a 10 day course of antibiotic pills. And pain medication...that was essential for me because it was honestly quite painful. Hope he feels better soon!

If it was me, I'd probably bring LO for a short visit, so long as baby doesn't have any complicated medical issues and up on her shots. Once I got home, I'd change out of the clothes and give baby a bath just to be cautious. Do the same for yourself too.

Hope DH feels better soon!

Thank you everyone for your advice and concern. Baby and I just dropped him off at the hospital. They said he should be discharged tomorrow morning if everything goes well. If not, we'll definitely go visit him!

It's going to be a long night...I know it's minor in the scheme of things, but I'm a worrier...

If it were me back when my first was 5.5 months old I probably would have done the same thing-- drive hubby there then go home. Is there a friend or relative who can stay with him, at least for a while?

Yeah...I work in a hospital and brought my son in to visit my coworkers before I came back from maternity leave...he was 3 months old. If it's a proper hospital, they'll be sanitizing each time they go in and out of their rooms, patients with the flu will be in isolation rooms and wearing masks, etc. I don't think I'd take LO into the waiting room of the ER, but I'd certainly take him to at least visit with Daddy for a little in his hospital room!

ETA: I have to work on Friday and Hubs has off with D, and they're planning to come visit me at work! I have no issue with bringing him into the hospital.

I would take your LO. We recently visited a friend at the hospital and DS was 3 months old! We went and visited him 2 days in a row. I took DS on my own the first day, then the 3 of us went the second day. Hospitals are pretty good about sanitizing things and having hand sanitizers everywhere. We're taking DS to the hospital tonight to visit a friend who just gave birth!

Wishing your hubby a quick recovery!

Yes of course they let a baby in the hospital, most babies come out from hospitals!

Calm down... go home and take your baby with you and go with your husband. Bring something to entertain your baby and extra milk/formula of course. Extra blankets too for baby in case it gets cold. Once your husband is settled, then you can plan what to do with your LO (go home and the usual routine). I am afraid you have to take tomorrow off to be with the baby and husband just in case.

I had an ER episode when LO was 4 months. I literally lost my mind / had amnesia because I drank too much water (can you imagine? It lead to chemical imbalance and I could have died. Long story). Husband scooped LO up (already put him down for bedtime), and we went to the ER. They admitted me after a few hours and I was in a room. Husband took LO back home and it was 2-3am. The next morning when our nanny arrived to our home and took care of LO, husband came to see me in the morning. I have to say he was a super man at that moment (had to control a half crazy woman who barely remembers who he is, and a 4 month old baby) and I don't know how he does it. But he did. If you are using a daycare, just do your usual routine and drop LO off at a daycare, then go see your husband.

ETA: We also had no one in town that could have helped watch our baby. We had our nanny though but she only was expected to work in her regular hours (9-6 back then)

You'll be fine! Calm and breathe, and lots of hugs and support!! I hope your husband feels better soon.

I took my 6 month old to the hospital earlier this month when my other LO was hospitalized for two days. It wasn't ideal but I needed to be there for LO and I didn't want to worry about leaving to get the baby from daycare...the hospital we were transferred to was out of the way.

I'm freaking out a little, I could use some perspective. My husband thought he had an ear infection and went to the doctor. They diagnosed him as having an infected saliva gland, and he has to go to the hospital overnight for IV antibiotic treatment. He sounded really scared when he called, and I'm really scared and upset for him. He's also in a lot of pain.

Question is, what should I/we do? We have a 5.5 month old, and don't really have anyone local who could watch him. Especially not the day before a holiday. Do the three of us go to the hospital together? Will the hospital even allow a baby? Do I have him take himself? Can/should he even do that?

What to do what to do??
