@fuzzypeaches: @Mrs.Panda: @Mrs. Pen: It was nice to hear from you ladies on your real life experiences. I knew there would be some healthcare professionals familiar with 12 hour shifts plus commute!

I don't see LO 1-3 days/week depending on my schedule. It sucks but it helps to have a job I generally enjoy and $$ to enjoy life too. Most people in my field work similar hours. I get a lot of mommy guilt from " outside" people which sometimes bothers me but is manageable overall.

When I go back to work (I'm a nurse) from maternity leave I will likely not see my daughter 3 days a week. I will leave before she's up and come home after she's gone to bed. I will do most wake ups as I still intend on breastfeeding, but it will sure be hard to be away from her so long. I'm also in school though so it is only temporary, though still a long time at 2 years. Sacrifices for a better life though!

@teawithpaloma: yes, unfortunately it's my life working and being a student. There were 2-3 days each week this past semester that my son was still sleeping when I left for work/school, and in bed when I got home.
Thankfully, like you, it's not permanent! It's a short term solution, and in the long run, it will work itself out. I spend extra time with him during semester breaks and while I know he misses me, I also know he is loved, and well taken care of. It doesn't get better than that.

@teawithpaloma: I used to be a consultant who traveled Monday - Thursday. My longest gig was in SF while I lived in DC, and commuted every week. It was pretty tough, and that was right out of college with no kids!

I would definitely consider it for a limited time though, as it was a great learning opportunity!

No. There is no amount of money that would take me from my baby. But a lot of my "baby must be 5 feet from me at all times" problem comes from anxiety. I just couldn't do it!!

@looch: Thanks. The doctoral program is of course longer but I would only do this job for 1 - 1.5 years. Then ideally I would transition into a teaching/research job at school and again have more flexibility.

Thanks ladies. I have a LOT to think about. The negotiations for the job would start in January so it will take some time to get to the finish line. I'll update with what happens!

It's important to remember that we are just trying to the best thing for our kids and our families and sometimes that require sacrifices on a few levels. You helped me see it wouldn't be the end of the world!

I flex my schedule and in order to work shorter days the rest of the week, I usually have one night where I try to work later, and as a result, don't get home until after my 15 month old is asleep. It's not my favorite thing, and do have mom guilt about it, but she enjoys her night with her dad and it allows me to see her more during the week, so it's a win for us.

After reading your timeline, I would absolutely do this if it would better my family in the long run (which I'm assuming a doctorate program would.) It's not ideal, but it's doable for sure.

In the winter, my on service weeks require me to come home after my younger daughter is asleep. Sometimes I can go a couple days without seeing her in the evening... But it's what I have to do and it only happens a couple times a year. Plus she's getting older and will be able to stay up later soon.

I'm primary bread winner, so it's what we have to do.

I do! I travel every week once a week for two days. I leave Sunday, and come home Tuesday and don't see DH on Mondays. It's a permanent schedule, but it came with a $$$ promotion so it was a no brainer. I'm currently pregnant, and LO will travel with me once born since I have family in the city I travel to.

I agree with @looch: If it's not forever, it's a short term thing for long term gain. A few months like this would be tough, but in the end, your LO could benefit greatly.
