I would accept it more at a matinee, less crowded showing than an evening/date night showing. So Friday night no, Wednesday afternoon sure.

I wouldn't take my infant. It gets loud in the theater, plus I wouldn't want to disturb anyone in case he does cry.
We don't plan on taking our toddler to see an animated film until she's a little older (currently 27 months old)

No way. I hate it when babies cry in movie theaters...I wouldn't want to risk it.

I probably wouldn't because I wouldn't want to disturb other movie-goers. Plus I think it might be a little too much stimulation for the baby. I don't know...Even if they're sleeping the whole time, it just seems like it would be a lot of noise for them to subconsciously hear?

I've done something similar to @PurpleUnicorn, where I've taken him twice to a baby friendly movie showing, where they lower the volume and leave the lights somewhat dimmed. He was about 3 months when I did this...I probably wouldn't attempt it now (at 9 months). He slept/nursed most of the time, but he did get a bit fussy. However, since it was like a 1pm showing in th emiddle of the week, there were only a few other ppl in the theater...I wouldn't take him on the weekend or at night.

I would also never do a horror movie.

I wouldn't, not to that movie. I'm actually a total wimp about horror movies anyway though, so there's that. But I'm thinking there are probably more jarring noises (quiet lead ups to screams and such) plus the other patrons would probably be less forgiving than viewers of something like Despicable Me 2. I think I'd rather try it out with a more family friendly movie, because really, if you are going to see a Pixar movie, you expect kids there and if the baby fusses, no big deal. Then if he is great during that movie, you could try it for a more adult one.

But really, honestly, DH and I are too big of babies to see the Conjuring so I can't picture a real baby doing it :)

@Navy_Mommy: ditto.

And i want to emphasize that having a baby carrier makes it SOO much easier and more likely your baby won't make noise or cry. Also, a pacifier comes in handy :) Although i don't give a pacifier unless he is going to sleep, i've made an exception for the movie theatre once or twice - i'll give it after he is done nursing.

ETA: another thing I do is when i have to sneak out, often i actually just need to get up and hold him as he doesn't want to sit still, so i can go stand off the side near the exit out of my seat and keep him quiet by standing and swaying. No one can see me and I can still see and enjoy the movie :)

ETA 2: lol, i just thought of another thing I do when he is awake, I turn him to watch the movie as sometimes he likes to look at the screen and that buys some more peaceful viewing time! I feel like all this sounds complicated but it's not, and for me it is totally worth it as I have always loved watching movies in the theatre.

In NY, they have a lot of Mommy and Me screenings with less crazy volumes, changing tables etc. Is there anything like that where you live?

If you can pull it off, go for it, but I would personally be really worried about the volume.

We tend to see a bunch of moveies all at once in an afternoon. E.g. DH is off for the summer so I took a few days off last week and we saw 4 movies in 3 days while LO was home with the nanny.

well i take L all the time to Stars N Strollers - it's a baby friendly showing once a week. Not kid movies, but they lower the sound, have a change table available and it's "acceptable" if your baby cries/makes noise.

On 4 occasions, I have taken him to a regular showing. I did find it way too loud for him so i cover his ears with my hands or last time I came prepared and rolled up a receiving blanket and put it over his ears. I've been lucky all 3 times as he slept or was quiet a good chunk of the time. He either slept in the car seat or i had in the Beco part of the time. Though like @runsyellowlites: we sat in front of the upper section near the exit so i was able to sneak out as needed, which i always had to do at some point but never missed too much of the movie.

If there's a movie one of us really wants to go, we will go with friends. We don't leave LO with anyone other than each other.

Not all babies make noise at movies, y'all. If you think your baby can go the length of the movie in your arms without having a fit and are willing to leave if you have to there's no harm in trying. Just sit on the edge of the row so if LO does start to fuss you can get out of there. A baby STARTING to fuss is no more of a disturbance than someone sneezing a few times.

@septemberlove: it sucks but the last movie we saw was probably the last HP bc we never had a babysitter. Personally I think it's really not fair to the other patrons.
Why can't DH go by himself if he wants to see it that bad? There's been many that one of us wants to see and we just wait for the DVD. :(

I have brought W to the movies TONS of times. When he was little he slept the whole time, and even now at 15 months if we go to an evening showing he sleeps.

The movie theater on the Navy base we live on is free so we never would have "lost money" if we had to leave halfway through.

Nope-- I'm a big believer in Murphy's Law. I also don't think it's fair to the other paying customers, too (like @regberadaisy said). I think just seeing a newborn/infant in a theatre would make me feel on edge, because I would be expecting them to cry at any minute and wouldn't be able to enjoy the movie as much.

I would consider it if I thought baby would sleep through the whole thing. We watched many movies at home while Lorelei slept on me! But I would also be ready to leave if it got too loud or wasn't working. And if I thought Mr. T would get mad about that I probably would just say no.

@mrbee: I think I'd hold him in our football hold, ready to nurse so if he started crying, it'd be 10 seconds to unsnap and latch him. 99.9% of the time, that soothes him. If it didn't work, I'd hightail it out of the theater (and we'd definitely sit on the end of the aisle near the door!)

Good question! Our 2.5 year old just say Despicable Me last weekend, and we want to take him for his first movie experience to see the sequel, because he LOVED it and sat still during the movie at home. But our 9 month old... what to do? I think we're going to take her, too, and try to time it so she sleeps/nurses the whole time. I'm sort of nervous but our go-to babysitter, my SIL, is not available.
