I agree with @Mrs. High Heels, they take a while to get the hang of, so I'd take it and learn on it! Then you'll also have a better idea of what you want if/when you want to get a new one.

I agree, take it! If you do decide you want something different when you get a LO, you could always give it back to them and let them sell it at that point.

@mrs. bird: ditto adira, I would try to get a prime lens if you can...but really, anything in addition to the kit lens is great!

@mrs. bird: haha, well, I'm sure they have some less expensive lenses you could borrow!

As for which lens you could ask for, I personally almost exclusively use my 50mm prime lens, though you can get the 50mm/1.8 for around $100, so you might want to ask for something nicer since this one's pretty cheap.

@blackbird: i don't know if i'd get the D7000, i'd get whichever one she gives me. i think they've traded a few pieces with my aunt and brother (all of them are amazing photographers!) so it's hard for me to keep up with who has what, but i know none of it is crap, just some of it might be older.

@hilsy85: she'll give me at least one lens with it, if she asks me which one i want, what should i be looking for?

@Adira: i'd be afraid of borrowing her lenses =D last time they went camera stuff shopping they spent more than we did on DH's car (granted he drives a POS commuter car), i nearly had a heart attack holding the camera.

Definitely take it! dSLRs are all about the lenses. They keep coming out with new versions, but the lens is really what's important. And a nice camera like that can be EXPENSIVE! I'd say take it!

PLUS, if all her cameras are Nikons, you'll be able to borrow her lenses and stuff!

The Nikon D7000 is a great camera. You can always use it in automatic. If you want "better" photos of your LO, invest in better lenses!

last night at dinner my mom mentioned they want to get rid of one of their DSLR cameras. my parents have a camera buying problem. anyway, she said they'll sell it if i don't want it, but that i was welcome to it if i wanted it. i don't know which one they're gonna get rid of, i know one is a nikon D7000 and the other is another nikon but i can't remember the numbers

honestly right now i don't see myself using it very often, but once we have a LO, i'd probably want one, right? how much do these things change? is it something where you'd really want a new one or do you think an older one would be adequate for someone who isn't super intense about photography? i would feel awful taking it from her now, then not using it and wanting to buy a new one later when she could have sold it, but i'd also be kicking myself if i don't take it and then go to buy something in the future that is the same thing i passed on for free. what would you do? take the camera or wait and get whatever is new once i think i'll use it?
