I don't tell my manager why I want a day off, just that I want it. I expect that if I have given enough notice (is this the problem here?), and there isn't a schedule conflict, that this will be granted.

In this specific situation I would be ok with it, if my schedule could accommodate it. My grandmother and father were both lifelong Cubs fans, they have both since passed without a Cubs world series, my brother and I are also big fans, so this feels like an incredibly significant occasion.

I think more importantly its not why she wants it off you should consider. Maybe just respect that she wants a day off. It would do better to support the employee based relationship vs. you deciding that her request is not important enough to you.

I took time off to see Bruce Springsteen in concert and only found out about a week ahead of time that I had tickets. I'd have given even less notice if I had to. It's The Boss.
If it isn't happening all the time then I don't know what else days off are for.

We only live once, folks. Something's are too important to miss- and it's not my job to decide what's important for someone else.

Glad you let her! Yes, I would and I have. Of course, I have PTO so I just use that. But I've called in to go to 2 parades and I've also scheduled PTO for day games (just so I can watch them on TV). And yep, I told my employer why. These things don't come around too often for most places. Generally if you get a set number of PTO, you can do whatever the hell you want with it! Unfortunately, these parades are by default last-minute events.

I am also one of those people that will take off the first 2 days of the NCAA tournament every year (thurs and fri) just to each watch at a bar or go to Vegas to watch. But I know those days well in advance. It's just parades or maybe the games themselves since you won't get advance notice they're playing until they pass through certain rounds of the tournaments/playoffs.

I'm not a big sports fan. But I was a nanny when I was 19 and asked for two days off so I could go to a music festival on the beach with friends. So I understand the sentiment! as an adult now with kids I likely wouldn't do that (and to be fair the concert thing was arranged in advance), but I know as a younger woman I may have been more likely inclined to!

Does she have a set mumber of personal or vacation days she's entitled to? If so, the reason shouldn't matter and she should be able to take it off unless there's a pre-existing reason why you absolutely need her that day. I never have to tell my boss what I'm planning to do on vacation days.

@catomd00: agree. It's a personal day that she's entitled to. She really shouldn't have to justify the reason to you. What if it was some other silly reason like to catch up on errands. You still probably wouldn't say no right?

I agree in asking if she could make up the day.

Personally, I wouldn't look at the reason why she wants off as the deciding factor. I never tell my boss why I'm taking off, nor does he ask. I see nothing wrong with wanting to celebrate a huge sports event. It's a once in a lifetime thing! But, yeah I don't think it's your place to judge how her husband uses his PTO either. If you need her to work, just say that. If you don't need her but you just don't think she has a good reason for taking off, then let her.

I would be peeved too! I don't think it's unreasonable for her to ask off for a sports event if she really enjoys that sort of thing, but I think it's inappropriate to take a personal day with such short notice (especially if she was late today too!).

Yes, I think it's a valid reason to take off. My company sent out an email saying that we're closed tomorrow so anyone can celebrate this more than incredible occasion for our team and city! I saw on Facebook a few of my friend's companies did the same. I'm not a big baseball fan (admittedly never watched baseball until the World Series), but this is history!

I'll preface this by saying I'm a huge Cubs fan, and it's hard for me to be unbiased since it's the Cubs, but....I totally get where both of you are coming from. I would go to that parade in a heartbeat were the parade not 2000 miles away! That being said, since you're being so nice and letting her go, I would certainly hope she understands this is a unique situation and you won't let her off for non-essential stuff in the future. Still... FLY THE W!!!!

Yeah... my husband flew out to Chicago last weekend just to be there and watch the games in bars in Wrigleyville because he has been waiting his entire life for this. He would take off work. We both stayed up to watch the game (and I'm not a big sports person but his excitement was contagious).

If you can spare her I would say yes. I would just be glad she asked ahead of time instead of calling out sick- in guessing there will be a whole lot of sick days tomorrow.

I could care less about baseball, but I *loved* the atmosphere when our local team has won the world series. On the night of the final game, it feels like everyone is coming together and there's just so much excitement and energy in the air, random people actually smile and high five you in the street, and everyone is sharing in something together. It's one of the very few times where it feels like everyone is together as a community. I was super bummed to have to miss the parade for work, I didn't complain and didn't ask off because I knew it wouldn't be feasible, but I was sad about it.

For me, When the Red Sox won the World Series it was a huge deal. I was in law school but I totally would have taken the day off of work for it. I can't remember if you work. If you do, then no. If you don't work, I would give her the day off. Good will goes a long way and unless you have an appt or something I would just do it. And I wouldn't pay her for the day. As a compromise I might ask her for another day instead.
