I just tried iPhone 3S as my vacation camera and I reallllly missed my canon. When you are trying to take a quick pic it's so annoying to unlock, find the camera app, line it all up, etc. The intuitive turn on and snap with a reg camera can not be beat!

@NYCaliMama: yes having two kids is a game changer! I'll probably rent a smaller dslr or take my 50mm lens.... We're also going to have an iPad and laptop and cell phones.... So much to carry on!

When I took the two kids from NYC to Hawaii, it was an eye-opener as to how different it is to travel with two kids in tow. Just be prepared to not vacation like you did before. For me, this meant not taking as many pics with my SLR as I would've liked.

We did bring it, and I'm glad for the shots I got on there, but some of my better shots were from my iPhone and point & shoot anyway. I'm not sure the SLR was worth bringing.

Although, this might be an option for you... I brought it along with the nifty fifty (50mm 1.8) only... that made it pretty compact... It's not the ideal travel lens, but I wasn't worried about damaging an expensive lens.

In the end, I do think it was nice to *not* shoot from the SLR so much... It freed me up to experience things with the kids instead of concentrating so much on getting good shots.

I took my iphone on a recent trip to St. Maarten. It was really all I needed. I think it would be enough especially if you have the external lens.

I LOVE taking vacation pictures, and I couldn't imagine being ok with just a smart phone. Mind you, I don't own a smart phone, so I am probably biased :) I have a slim point & shoot that takes good pictures (nothing mindblowing) and is lightweight enough that it doesn't annoy me to carry it. I also like to make photo books, so I'd be concerned about the quality of an iPhone camera :)

Ahg please take your dlsr. I cannot stand this new world where the only pictures we get to see are smartphone pictures. You'll regret it later on in life when you're looking through photo albums and they're all phone pictures with filters.

Right now, I only take my iphone, but that's because it takes as good pictures as my older, getting crappy digital camera. If I had a DSLR (which is #1 on my Christmas list) I would definitely bring it.
For a major trip to the Philippines, I think I would want some amazing photos.

We did this when we went to Dominican Republic in January. My friends brought a DSLR, but since we spent most of our time at the pool and beach, they left it in their room 99% of the time and we just used my iPhone. The pictures were fine for putting on Facebook/viewing on the computer. I didn't try to print any though.

For our trip to the Czech Republic in two weeks I still don't know what I want to do.... Our point and shoot takes crappy photos. We don't have a DSLR but my in-laws said we could borrow theirs but I really don't want to be lugging a huge camera around....
