I agree with others that I would probably take him this year and then start planning our trips for earlier next year, to avoid this issue.

I think because it IS the beginning of the school year, it's okay. He wouldn't have missed TOO much. A lot of the first week is just orientating the kids to the new routine anyways. Not to make light of what they're doing and working on in school. So I would talk to the teacher, ask if there is anything she wanted to give in terms of hand outs or homework and try to squeeze some in during the vacay. I think family vacations are very important and I know first hand that your time off schedule can vary wildly with your kid's vacation schedule. And sometimes, you just don't want to deal with every other kid on vacation either!

@Jess1483: yes that is my biggest concern - the fact that he will JUST be getting into a groove and then BAM he misses a week of school.

If it was in November I don't think I would be as concerned

As a teacher, I always understood that parent vacation time wasn't always the same as our vacation time. I taught 2nd grade. I do think talking to the teacher, being apologetic and understanding, and asking for skills to work on during the trip (rather than physical work, especially at the K-level) can go a long way. Counting seashells? Reading every night? Talking about colors or shapes? What would she like you to focus on? Moving up through the grade levels, I do think it's important to emphasize to your child that grades need to be acceptable to go on trips, because a struggling student missing days is a much bigger problem than a student who is mastering skills appropriately.
I will say that since it's so close to the beginning of the year, your child will miss some of the team-building, community-building that teachers generally do, as well as learning systems and such. But new students do it all the time, and I'm sure it will turn out fine.

I'd take him!

My parents did this when we were kids. They'd send a note with us to school for all our teachers and one for the principal giving them a heads up and to give us our homework that we'll be missing when we're gone. Even though we were on vaca, each morning, we had do some homework (equally distributed over the week) before we could head out for that day's fun. This included studying for any tests that we'd be taking immediately when we returned home. We hated it, but it worked out really well. We were never behind!

As a elementary teacher I am always fine with it as long as it's not a reoccurring habit and begins to negatively affect the learning. A week once a year isn't a big deal IMO!

Former teacher here...I think it is fine as long as you don't make a huge habit of it and try to make up any work that he will miss. Also, don't expect the teacher to be able to give you stuff ahead of time (though she may be able to...its a huge deal to get materials prepped that far in advance, especially at the beginning of the year). It is a lot easier for her to give make up work after the week is over. Honestly, being the beginning of kindergarten there may not be any work to make up anyway, but it would be nice to ask.

@Mamaof2: I would probably leave him home with DH then. It's not that I think missing school is a big deal (especially because it's only half a day), but at the same time I wouldn't want to set a precedent that vacation is more important than school or that school isn't important (since your LO is old enough to possibly draw these conclusions).

The funny thing is we have been going to MB every Sept for YEARS and I always see sooo many school aged kids and I was like "geesh, I guess parents don't care about taking kids out of school" and now here I am in the same predicament!

Since it is half days I would take him. You need to check with the school and see how many unexcused absences they are allowed to have.

But from here on out, I would make sure vacations are done before school starts.

Take him out of school!! My parents took us out of school for a couple vacations and it was AWESOME! We were older, so we had to makeup homework and stuff, but totally worth it! Your son will be totally bummed to be left behind, so don't do that!

DS starts K the day after Labor day - 2 weeks later is our trip to MB!

I am going back and forth on what to do.

K here is only half a day, more specifically 8:45 to 11:30am - he will be at DCP for the rest of the day - so I am leaning on taking him out.

If he was in full day K I would not pull him out.

But then maybe I should wait and see how the first 2 weeks go and then decide???

What would you do?

DH hates the beach so he thinks I should go with DD (3 yrs old) and leave DS home with him - I also think DS would be crushed that he is missing the beach with his grandma!
