I worked as a school-based mental health professional for awhile. I was a behavior specialist who intervened with students with mental health challenges (depression, anxiety, ODD, autism, etc.) in the classroom. Managing crises when needed, but also teaching coping skills, etc. I worked in conjunction with the school counselor and school psychiatrist, as well as a therapist with my program. I think the program was invaluable for the kiddos in it, and I was also able to help teachers with concerns with other students as well. I would love to see school-based mental health programs expanded, because improvements can be made for kids, especially when they have assistance in their triggering environment.

As a parent, I would definitely take my child to talk to someone if I felt like they needed someone else to talk to, even if I didn't feel they had a specific mental health concern.

@Mama Bird: Yeah, I worry about our (DH and I) issues.

Sure! I was really pleased to see that our school added a psychologist to their staff. It's a wonderful resource to have right there.

Yeah. I worry that the kids might inherit my depression, and even more that I won't know if they do. My parents sure as anything never knew because they had bigger things on their plate, and probably the only reason I survived my teenage years is that I had a dog who looked out for me. I think the kids will need better coping skills then I had if they have this problem... which might call for therapy.

@Mamaof2: How often do you take your LOs? Does it continue throughout school? Do they miss some school because of it. I think missing their lunch would be the best time to schedule therapy but not sure how easy it is to get that appt. Or even therapy after school or weekends, if it's available would be great.

yes of course and I do!

I agree about the stigma - I had a new manager at work and told him I had to take leave to take DS to his therapist and it was a gasp and "oh wow sorry"

I was like sorry for what? Its been amazing for him!

Our Elementary has a huge no bullying program so I am hopeful that it actually works!

I would absolutely take LO to see a therapist if needed. I also hope that he will have other adults in his life besides DH and I that he can trust to talk to about things.

Schools do actually have some resources, but I agree that more is needed.

With all the suicides I'm hearing about in young children, I'm seeing more and more need for therapy for children. It would be great for schools to start some type of mental health program or, at least, teach coping strategies. Especially in this day in age where social media could be making things worse.

I'm thinking high school or middle school, but my friend who is a guidance counselor thinks it should start younger and I agree. (She said she is in charge of her whole elementary school, which is 600 students).

I will try to limit social media to my LOs but I think coping strategies might be best. It might even be proactive if and when they are bullied at school or on social media. I think nowadays kids will find a way to create an account without my knowledge, if I were to tell they can't have one.

I do really wish there was less stigma against therapy.
