@CatchAFallingStar: when my son had green and mucousy poop I thought it was because he wasn't nursing "right", something about too much foremilk if I'm remembering correctly? He only had it for a few days and then it went away. Fwiw!!

Just to share- DD is 5.5 months now and I started slowly bringing dairy back in about 2 weeks ago. I’m now eating occasional cheese, not asking for “no cheese and no sour cream” when I get something Mexican and also have eaten things like cake with buttercream, scones from starbucks and tzaziki on a gyro. So far, she hasn’t reacted at all. So, maybe my insitinct was right that she’s outgrown her MSPI. Let’s hope so!!

@CatchAFallingStar: the course of action would be the same at this point whether or not it would be positive for blood, so I can understand not testing for blood, especially since it's only been a month.

I didn't intentionally test until after 9 months. The fact that one test could take a couple weeks to get out of both our symptoms was not something I was interested in enduring!

@Kemma: my baby hasn’t been super fussy and doesn’t cry a lot, so that wasn’t a symptom for her.. her only symptom is the green and mucusy poop

Just wondering- should our pediatrician have tested her poop for blood? She never even mentioned doing any kind of testing.

@CatchAFallingStar: Give it more time and if the mucus doesn't improve, I'd also cut soy. Milk protein intolerance soooooooooo frequently coincides with soy intolerances as well. Drool/nose mucus can pass through, but I would expect to see normal poop in the mix too, not just mucus.

@starchild: Yes, her poop improved, but I can’t be totally sure if it was because I cut out dairy or because of some other unknown reason. She’s a very happy baby. Hardly any crying unless she’s hungry, or other obvious baby reasons. So, that was never a symptom. The poop was really the only symptom. It’s still full of mucus, but brownish yellow. She’s a very mucusy baby- nose and mouth, so I’m assuming she’s just swallowing that and pooping it out. So hard to know. Ugh!

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and advice!

ETA- she’s also on meds for reflux.. her older sister had it really bad and we and her pediatrician suspect she has it as well

Honestly, if her poop improved by eliminating dairy, you already know it's the culprit. Is the mucus also gone?

Depends how much crying you're talking about and what other factors. Like in the evenings? Is she inconsolable despite being burped/changed/fed/rocked/etc? Often MSPI goes hand in hand with reflux, which can be 'silent' or not tons and tons of visible spit up. Something to consider. But also as jennibenni said, it can take 6 weeks for dairy to fully clear your system.

@CatchAFallingStar: just a quick question about the dairy, did you find eliminating it made a difference to baby’s behaviour? My wee girl is five weeks old and does a lot of crying and I’m wondering if dairy is the culprit but her poop is normal so I’m not sure!

If it’s only been a month I would give it more time before trying dairy as it can take six weeks for any you had before to fully clear yours and then her system.

@CatchAFallingStar: I didn’t intentionally test out but after being great for a couple weeks after eliminating dairy (after the initial three weeks of elimination to resolve the green poops) I did have two really fussy days - screaming and pulling off my boob, terrible sleep, all day fussing - and a couple of green poops. I can only speculate that the Mexican I ate Thursday was the problem even though I ordered carefully and asked. Friday and Saturday were fussy and Sunday was fussy and green poops. Monday things seemed to be getting better and by Tuesday we were back to normal. As a result I am not eager to test again! But based on my experience it should be pretty apparent and also resolve much more quickly than the initial elimination. Take it with a grain of salt since I’m not totally positive I ate dairy, but that’s my two cents

My 12-week-old DD’s pediatrician suspects she has a dairy protein intolerance due to green and mucusy poop. (I’ve posted about it a couple times) I went off dairy a month ago and her poop is now normal color. I’m wondering if I should have some dairy to test to make sure that was the culprit. Advice?
