I would def go! A trip like that will be hard to fit in post-baby and I think that the benefit outweighs the risk. Esp with all of the preventative/safety measures you could take! Go for it! And BABY JUJU your way!

I would definitely go. Just a note on malaria: There is no reliable shot to prevent malaria BUT there are pregnancy safe prophylaxis that you can take. Just make sure your doc puts you on the right one, and start taking it before you leave. Depending on where you will be in Vietnam, the risk of actually getting malaria shouldn't be very high at all. Also, my mother had malaria 3 times when she was pregnant with my sister and that sister, while born a bit underweight, is very healthy.

I would go! I was in New Zealand for three weeks during my first tri. Granted, no malaria risk, but still -- I'm so glad I went.

There are no shots for malaria....

I said maybe because ultimately it depends on how you feel about it. I think I would go because those risks are worth it to me... but you won't be able to take malaria prophylaxis and so malaria will be a risk. However, you could take great efforts to prevent mosquito bites with DEET and protective clothing.

@bluestriped bee: I have! It was almost 15 years ago when I was a freshman in high school. Eating from the open air markets, going to DaLat, hanging out in Saigon, and of course visiting family... It was a trip of a lifetime!

I would probably go, but would do research to make sure I knew where there was a good hospital near where I was staying for worst case scenario if there was trouble with the pregnancy. Someone close to me had an ectopic while traveling and hemmoraged very badly, luckily she had access to good medical care and was ok, but I'd hate to think if she hadn't. Worst case scenario and I'm sure it won't happen....just be prepared!

Agreed. It would not be your fault if you were to miscarry.

Totally think you should go!!

I would definitely go. Later in pregnancy I would be concerned about the lack of good medical care but within the first month of pregnancy if you miscarry there is pretty much nothing that even the best doctor can do to stop it.

I would go. This sounds like an amazing, once-in-a lifetime trip and as long as you take the necessary precautions, there's no reason why you'd be more likely to miscarry or anything like that! Plus, how wonderful would it be to tell you grandmother in person that she's going to be a great-grandma?? And finally, I'm assuming you would buy the tickets relatively soon, so if you decided not to go and then weren't pregnant, that would be sooo disappointing, right?? Gosh, I'm jealous, Vietnam is very high on my list of places I'd love to travel to!

I would definitely go! If you are pregnant (fingers crossed!) you'll just need to take a few extra precautions, but it shouldn't be too difficult! I travelled to a malaria country (Vanuatu) when I was 14 weeks pregnant and it was fine. I could have taken pregnancy safe malaria pills but decided that using insect repellent with DEET would be good enough and less risky (I believe anything with 50% DEET or less is considered safe for pregnancy). I also made sure to not use tap water for anything and avoided all ice in drinks and fresh fruit and veg that weren't cooked or had a skin that couldn't be peeled off.

It all turned out to be fine and it was a great trip! If this is a once in lifetime trip, which it sounds like it will be with all the factors you listed, I would definitely not pass it up!

And as someone else said, terrible as it would be to think about, if something goes wrong with the pregnancy that early, there is probably nothing that could have been done regardless of where you were. Hopefully that's not something you ever have to think about though!

I would go, because you will get shots for measles & malaria, and I feel that if one is going to miscarry, it's because it wouldn't have been a viable pregnancy... Nothing you do/don't do (besides something obviously bad, like drugs or bungee jumping or whatever) would affect that either way. Whether you were in Vietnam or not.

I would be more cautious of what to eat over there, and not do anything too risky (like going through Saigon traffic on a scooter, haha), but I would definitely go and enjoy myself!

I'm not pregnant yet but I'm at the end of my fertile period, so there is a chance I might be pregnant. *Fingers crossed!*

Just found out this morning that my parents are going to Vietnam and want my sisters and I to join them for two weeks.

The best prices for travel would be leaving Thanksgiving day. That's a little over a month away! So if I go, I need to buy my tickets soon.

Would you go?

There are some risks...
1) Malaria in Vietnam
2) Measles in Vietnam
3) Miscarriage and medical assistance

Why I should go?
1) I have never been to Vietnam
2) See my only living grandparent... my grandmother is 90 years old. My parents don't know how much longer she'll be around for.
3) Probably only time my parents, my sisters and I can go at the same time. My sister and I don't have kids yet. My brother already can't go because of his kids.
4) I'm on the west coast so flights are cheaper. Under $900 for RT flight. My sister and parents are or will be paying around $1100 from the east coast.
