@TapDancer: We loooved San Diego! We were only there Sat. until Tues. but we had an awesome time. The weather was gorgeous, the food was amazing. We stayed in Coronado, but with a rental car you can easily travel all over--downtown San Diego, La Jolla, etc. Definitely recommend it!

We're still vacationing to the gulf coast this summer. But I live in Louisiana, so it's not like the mosquito risk is any less staying home.

@MrsSCB: So glad to hear that - San Diego is our definite next choice for a replacement trip! Was just researching this morning in fact. Flights from Austin are easy/inexpensive as well. Thought a bit about going to San Fran/Northern Cal, but I'm really looking for some sunshine :silly:

@TapDancer: FWIW, we went to San Diego recently for our babymoon and it was wonderful! And not a mosquito to be seen. I don't know where in TX you are, but the flight prices to San Diego from Houston weren't bad at all. Just in case you want to change course and go somewhere else :-)

@TapDancer: Yes, I think its not just a black or white should I go or not (for US locations not the CDC identified places). If it was a family reunion or special wedding or something like that, where you felt the need to be there I would totally grab the bug spray and go. But since your just going for fun and to relax and it wouldn't be a huge deal to cancel now, its probably not worth the stress.

@sandy: Where are you going? We were down in Orlando last month and saw ZERO mosquitos. They are much closer to the swamps/water/south than we are. Up in the panhandle, we have a ton!

I cancelled my trip to Aruba this past February before the virus was even reported there because I was 25 weeks pregnant. My doctor is not at all an alarmist and she said the reports she was hearing were so scary that I should def cancel. So yes, if I were you I would cancel to be safe.

@sandy: given that it is so soon and there are no reported cases of contracted Zika there AND given you are going to the tourist Mecca of the world, I would say you are fine. I used the OFF deep woods wipes like it was my job. They are really convenient and I felt like I could get every nook and cranny.

Looks like you've gotten some good advice here. July is still far out enough that hopefully you'll be able to find an alternate beach vacation or getaway! I know I've been to the Gulf Coast area in July (near Mobile, AL) and the mosquitos were awful in the evening.

That said, we have had a trip planned to FL for months and aren't canceling it (booked way before I was pregnant). I haven't been to FL in years but the three times I have been out there I don't remember ever getting a mosquito bite or seeing mosquitos. People tell me it's because all the major tourist areas spray so heavily. I'm nervous for sure but trying to stay calm about it. We're going in a week and so far everything I've read say all the confirmed cases of Zika in FL are people who traveled outside the US in affected areas. I plan on slathering on the DEET bug spray

Thanks @mrspickle: That was my experience last year as well (we booked the same spot on the beach for this year) -- the winter was wet so the mosquitoes were out.of.control. The more I think about it, the more I think I'd just be panicked (and indoors) the entire time.

I think she meant not to use deet right now when zika wasn't even here. Since there is no risk of zika at the moment, she prefers I not use deet. Honestly I hate bug spray and avoid it anyways (unless zika does pop up).

@FaithFertility: she said to use the 25% deet aka the off deep woods and other sprays, which are the only kind that have been shown to ward off Zika carrying Mosquitos. She said to wear it all day every day while I was away, which I did. Now, this was one week, and I returned to Maine where there's no Zika risk so I probably won't have to wear any deet this summer. I'm not sure if that was a factor in her advice to me.

Thanks, all! Very helpful.

I think you're right @T.H.O.U: there might be more risk driving to Galveston than there actually is in Galveston with zika. Just depends on my level of worry/stress and how important the trip is. Luckily we are going with friends who will be extremely understanding if we cancel. Also, I had no idea about the airline cancellation thing. Good to know, thanks!

@whiskers: Interesting about deet. I'll definitely ask my doctor about that. None of the natural options have worked well for me, either.

@winniebee: I remembered that you were wrestling with the family vacation decision. Glad you had a great time and only saw one mosquito! The worry is a factor no matter what though, I hear ya on that. And YES about the sunburn - that's happened to me before, too!

@FaithFertility: my doctor isn't concerned at all at this point. It's not in Florida so there isn't anything for pregnant women in Florida to be concerned about atm.

. I've done a lot of research. Some countries seem to have better mosquito eradication programs than others, which is obviously a factor. Also it all comes down to whether people are reporting cases....they may be present and people aren't aware or just aren't reporting.

@TapDancer: most airlines are offering a refund if you show proof of pregnancy. So I would consider going and cancelling if needed. We are in FL and we've just been using deet.

I'm a proponent that you have to live your life (there is a risk everyday getting in a car) but you have to decide how important the trip is.
