@mrsmcd - I agree. It's a heavy issue for a 2yo and (no offense to our dog) but she's not going to rmemeber this in the long run. That's why I figured that after we put Kona down we'd just maybe say that Kona had to go bye bye. It surprised me when my dad said we should find a way to explain it to her.

@bluestriped bee and @meredithnyc - thank you. It's so hard watching a pet fall ill and knowing when to say enough is enough :-(

@BeachMama: I would probably not explain that at all. I don't remember anything from when I was 2 years old so it seems like the concept would just go to waste anyhow on a baby of that age. Also, death of kind is such a sad, adult issue. I wouldn't burden a 2 year old with that unless it was some sort of very light "doggy is an angel in heaven with god" kind of thing that served a greater purpose than merely trying to make a baby understand death. Best of luck!

ETA: So sorry to hear about your dog...

Our beloved family dog is sick and I'm thinking we'll have to put her down in the next couple weeks. My dad thinks that we should try to explain it to DD, that Kona is sick and may not be here much longer. I feel like she's too young to really get it and figured we'd just explain to her after the fact that Kona isn't here anymore. Has anyone gone thru this? Any suggestions on how to handle it?
