I'd definitely check seatguru -- I used to have status on USAir, and half the time the "first class" upgrade seats were barely bigger than the regular ones. But I haven't flown them since the merger.

It does seem a little pricey, but I would base it on how (un)comfortable you have been and whether you have been sleeping well at home. There's no sense showing up after a red-eye being exhausted and miserable. But there's also no sense paying for the upgrade if you really aren't going to be comfortable/sleep anyways, you know?

Well, large seat or not, reclining more or not, it's still first class and I think that now is the time to do it because you're about to have twins! Once the babies come it will not be about you anymore and unless you're super rich you probably won't have this opportunity again. You deserve it!

@bluestriped bee: I wouldn't upgrade, and here's why: more often than not you can upgrade the day of your flight when you check in, and you can do so closer to the $100 range. Now for what you're planning it sounds like a way better deal. I was taught this trip by a friend who is an airline employee. ;) $260 one way is like another flight to me, so it would be too hard for me to spend that amount. Though I'm cheap and don't know the joys of first class living lol.

If it didn't break the budget, I would upgrade. Some airlines might upgrade you for free the day of the flight if there is room in first class but I think it depends on the staff. I remember trying to get on an earlier flight home when I was around 26 weeks pregnant and there was space on it but they wouldn't give me a seat unless I paid the change fees yet they were requesting for people on my flight to take a later flight home because my flight was booked.
If you don't want to splurge on first class, you may want to see if your plane has the bigger more spacious seats in the front of coach - I can't remember if US Air has that but Delta did - it wasn't that much more money but was better than the regular seats in coach.

@Raindrop: Oh, I know it's not a sale. I was going to spend that money on checked bags so it lowers the 'cost' of the upgrade. I was going to spend that money anyway. That's all I was saying.

Also, I had no definite plans to upgrade, the thought has crossed my mind. It's just funny that I got the email and it does make me wonder if I should.

Anyway, I haven't decided on the upgrade yet.

Tough choice! 260 seems affordable for such a luxury but I think in the end I personally wouldn't go for it since that is 260 dollars I wasn't planning to spend for that.

A sale on something that you would have otherwise not gotten is not a sale.

For that price it sounds totally reasonable! I've flown business and coach for work while
pregnany and it's soooo much more comfortable. Also my doc had recommended walking every 1-2 hours during the flight to prevent blood clots and I didn't worry about it while nice and comfy and totally reclined in business class.

@sunny: I've shipped boxes through USPS (I think I looked into UPS at some point) and it's pretty pricey to ship across the country. I usually do flat rate boxes, if I need to send something. I just tried a 12x12x12 package weighing 25lbs and the cost is $50 through USPS. (Oh, it will take a week to ship.) Flying with a checked bag for $25 with a weight limit of 50 lbs is actually a pretty good deal.

I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing yet but I could borrow luggage from my family so I'm not taking empty luggage. I'm only staying a week so my stuff will fit in a carry-on and I'll place that into a bigger luggage, so I have the ability to put breakables in the carry-on on the way back and use the large luggage for gifts. Hopefully, small gifts like clothes and such. My guests do know that we will be traveling and my hosts requested large gifts to be sent to my house. Oh, another thing I could do is take just the carry-on inside a large luggage and that's it. If I get anything boxed, I'll find a larger box that fits within the airline's luggage requirement and fit everything in there and just check the box. I've seen boxes on the carrousel when picking up bags. I just have to make sure it's the right size and weight. Yeah, I think I'll do that instead of any extra empty luggage.

My brother is giving us his city mini select with second seat and accessories so a $600+ stroller is definitely worth it to take back with us. Plus, we are going to take advantage of the free stroller that they allow people check or gate check (not sure what we will do quite yet). DH and I will check in separately to check the stroller so we don't get weird looks on not actually having a baby in hand. haha.

As a back-up plan, if someone gets us something new and too big, I think we'll have to return it to the store and buy it when we get back home.

Oh, a friend of mine said to check out greyhound buses because they do cargo shipments. I'll look into it if I have to.

What if you don't bring the 2 pieces of luggage over to PHL and instead box up all your gifts and then ship via UPS/FedEx? There's just got to be a better way than to bring over 2 empty pieces of luggage.

That doesn't really answer your to upgrade or not upgrade question, but it might save you some money. :-)

You might also be able to do a same day upgrade (e.g. on checkin, especially if you checkin online right at the time the checkin window opens) for less money if you want to take a chance on it. I would check out the current capacity of the plane to help make that decision too.

@bluestriped bee: I asked my OB about sleep aids for travel and her opinion was no...for a couple reasons. (I travel a lot for work...I went to Europe twice will expecting DD - and several domestic trips as well). Unfortunately at 25+ weeks (I think thats where you are) they worry about swelling - so my Dr said I had to basically drink a bottle of water for every hour I was in the air. This also guaruntees you are getting up to pee enough that things are circulating to help with swelling also. So keep that in mind - you pay for a nice cozy seat to sleep and then you are told by your Dr to move around every hour on the plane! ;)

@snowjewelz: Yup, one way. I'm flying to Philly. My stay is shorter than my usual summer trip because I'm afraid of the how hot and humid it will be. I'm usually a beach goer but even the thought of laying out does not sound nice at all. My sister asked me if I wanted to go on any road trips. My one request was access to air conditioner and possibly a pool. Haha.

$260 one way I'm assuming? I feel like for red eye it might be worth it. But I saw some posts saying depending on the airline some first class seats are not worth it, but I still think given your situation it might be worth it!

I flew at 16 weeks to Texas from California. I was miserable. Not having room to stretch or move around was not comfortable. Flew again at 20 weeks only an hour both ways and i was pretty done when I landed both times. I'd do it. They'll be much nicer to you and the extra room would really help i would think, you might even manage sleeping. What airline are you flying tho? As someone mentioned us air has terrible first class, with them it might not be worth it

I would check into your airline...first class on Air Canada means a sweet ass pod and being treated liked royalty so I assumed most first class was like that.

Dh and I were excited when we were upgraded on our honeymoon to first class on US airways, but it was a joke. The seats were slightly larger but that was about it....no way I would pay extra to fly with tha seat !!
