@daniellemybelle: I'm pretty sure I know what name it is. And my very white friends used it as a middle name for their son. It is super cute!

@anonysquire: At least it's not "stereotypical" for you guys!

@zippylef: Nope! :) I think that is more of a "black" name than the one we plan to use.

Both me and my husband are as white as they come and we have a few "ethnic" names on our list. I just like names regardless or gender, race or anything else :)

I'm African-American, Hubs is White, so when we have our mixed child, I'd rather not have a "sterotypical" name. But, the name we LOVE is in the top 10 for 2012, AND is a top name for African-American boys. *Shrugs*. We will still probably use it!

Hmm...Because I am Black and DH is white, we have had this conversation somewhat. We're Team Green and discussing both boys' and and girls', and I have to admit that I have my own biases about names and their associations. I've found that I feel that way about girls' names in particular.

That said, if the name is Biblical, classic and one that you love, I don't think there any racial or ethnic associations should keep you from choosing it.

I think you should use it if you love it! And I don't think Biblical names are stereotypical as much as they are classic.

I don't think the common names are stereotypically white. Maybe because I've seen everyone use them. Everyone I know names their kids "-den" now, same with Jacob and Noah. But I have to agree with some of the very ethnic AA names (the ones you don't see anyone else use). But even so, I have a friend that named her boy that and she's Asian.

I agree with pp, if you love the name, there's no limit :)

My friend had exactly this problem for exactly the same reason - think Shaft!!! Anyway, her husband was dead set on using the name so they went with it - and you know what my Mother-in-law said when i told her what their son was called? "Oh, that's an usual name for a non-Jewish child!!!" I think names have different connections to different people and these connections do change over the years, too. I wouldn't worry that it's a "stereotypical" name - if you love it, go for it!

I always swore I wouldnt name my kids a name in the top 100. I grew up with one of those 80s names and there was always someone else with the same name in my class. I hated it.

When we came up with C's name, we loved it right off. I had serious misgivings because it is becoming increasingly popular. If you factor in that she was born in the UK, its super popular. We still named her it because we love it.

If you live the name, use it.

Also, if its the name I think it is. I like it. :)

I don't think race should play into name choices.

That said, I've had people raise their eyebrows at my mentions of the names "Nahla" or "Amirah" because "um... those names sound kind of... not white.". Yours is a reverse of my problem.

Choose the name you love, and try to ignore any negative voices around you. If that's the name that fits your child, then by all means!

There's a boy's name that my husband and I really like. I'm not going to say it because I want to keep our names secret. :) It's a fairly traditional, Biblical name but I don't know anyone with it. It's not a super popular name overall, though it is in the top 100. DH doesn't care if a name is popular, but I would prefer not to use a very common name.

However, the name seems to be more popular with African Americans. My husband is African American, and I don't have anything against "ethnic" names at all. In fact, it did cross my mind that this name would particularly suit a man of color for some reason. Out of curiosity I Googled it and it is a top 10 name for African American boys.

I started to wonder if naming a little AA boy this name would be the equivalent of naming a white little boy Jacob or Noah. (No offense to those that choose those awesome names - they are just very popular!) I wouldn't want our son to be fulfilling a stereotype by having a very common name for his ethnicity. I also wouldn't want anyone to think we intentionally chose a "black name" for that reason alone... but maybe I'm over-thinking it.

What do you think? Does it matter? Would you make the same choice?
