@miss-spunkin: We have a company called 'Milkworks" around here that is all about supporting women and breast feeding, that is where she found the women in need. I'm not sure if they are a national company, but they have been a great resource.

@enjollah: If it was a new baby then yes, you'd have to wait and see. If you already know what your baby will or won't tolerate then you can screen candidates that way.

@pelikila: and you basically won't know that until....they have a reaction? I was not on meds, nor did I drink when I was pregnant. For the most part I ate healthy :)

Only if it was from someone I know very well. The diet thing is something to consider because what if they drank or were on prescription meds, etc. Maybe I"m overthinking it but I would just feel comfortable if the milk came from someone I trusted and knew.

I wouldn't (at least for DS) because of exactly what @miss-spunkin: and @pelikila: pointed out, diet. My DS has FPIES and is allergic/intollerant to WAY too many foods. It would be impossible for us to find a donor that met our needs (I'm back down to only eating 5 foods).

HOWEVER, I did donate before I went on a total elimination diet to a mama who adopted and the baby was able to tolerate milk from multiple donors since she ran out of mine (at the time I was top 8 allergen free, so avoiding thinks like milk, wheat, soy, etc and after 4 months on my milk the baby started getting donor milk containing those things with no problems).

@enjollah: Something to keep in mind beyond what @miss-spunkin: said is diet. If a baby has an allergy or sensitivity to certain foods, then someone else's milk may not be a good match.

I would, if it came through the breast milk donation place, because then, it would be tested or if it was from someone I knew very well. I would donate if I had extra milk too.

I would. I think some women would love to BF but can't and this helps out. So I would donate mine (if I had too much) or sure some if I didn't have any. I think for the first month or so.

@enjollah: there would only be risks if you didn't eat well, drank alcohol, took meds/drugs, had history of serious illnesses- the like... which I doubt is true.

I would def give some to my sis/bro if I were in that situation!

Question, can anyone/baby drink anyone's breastmilk? Are there any risk for any type of reaction? My brother recently had a baby but they're going the formula route and my mom half jokingly mentioned that I could give his baby/my nephew some of mine breastmilk (this was when I proudly showed her my stockpile...haha). At the time I was hesitant but I wouldnt mind giving him a little...just because some breastmilk is better than none...

@jessiejo17: that is so cool! What a cool opportunity she has. I would love to be able to do that. If I ever adopted, I hope that I could find a way to get breastmilk.

I am an exclusive pumper, and once my sister gave birth she realized just how difficult it was on me to pump for my son. She graciously offered her breast milk so that I could pump less often. While I appreciated her offer, I did decline because pumping was an option I made for myself. I knew that if I had accepted and if anything happened to her supply, I didn't want to take away milk that was made especially for her daughter.

I had to supplement with formula for a little over a month, and I was perfectly fine with that. I would not go out of my way to find a source of breast milk other than my own.

On the other hand, I am more than willing to share my breast milk with close family members. I'm not sure if I could be comfortable with a stranger though.

I would, my sister donates her's to women in our community all the time. She has a LOT of milk, and already has a freezer full. She has a lady she gives to regularly that adoped a baby, and another who was unable to produce enough milk.

Absolutely! I would both use someone else's milk (as long as I knew they were healthy), or donate mine, if the need arose.

I wouldn't necessarily need to know the person either, although I would prefer it.

I think of it this way - with another person, that milk is specifically created and made for babies and I can ensure the woman in healthy. With an animal (like a cow or goat), it's not created for human babies and I can't check the health. So why would I pick formula over human breastmilk?

My sisters neighbor/friend had a baby about a month ago and breastfeeding has been really rough. She's not making enough milk and he's losing weight, so her doctor was really pressuring her to use formula, she finally had to, but her son rejected it, he spit it up. So she asked my sister if she could use some of her breastmilk, my sister would have definitely given it to her, except that she has no excess, she makes just enough for her son. She felt so bad.

Anyhow, I always seem to have extra, my son definitely doesn't drain me out. I can usually pump an additional 3-4 ozs AFTER a feeding. It's crazy. So I told her to offer her some of mine, if she felt comfortable with it.

I would definitely use breastmilk in place of formula if I had the option. But I would probably want to use someone's who I know really well, and know their diet. Like my sister, I would totally use hers.

how about you? or would you just use formula?
