Even though it was said, just wanted to chime in that dd's daycare also combines the classrooms. They never did that in infants but once she moved to toddlers they would combine the younger toddlers with the older ones at certain points throughout the day

Thank you all SO much, all of your comments have made me feel much better! In her infant classroom she was almost never combined with the other room (I think just twice in all this time at dropoff when a teacher was stuck in the subway.) but I might ask about that as an option when this is more formally communicated.

For only 4 months I would let her enjoy some quiet 1:2 time! She will adjust to a larger classroom when necessary.y

At the daycare my LO goes to, they'll combine toddler 1 and toddler 2 sometimes or have a toddler go to infants or 2s to balance things out some days. I would enjoy the small group while it lasts. When my LO entered 2s there were so many kids in there that I felt it was too much - he was OK but it seemed like too many kids in the class. 3 of them just moved up though to 3s so it is not as bad now.

In terms of going from a little class to a small one when you move, my (very shy) son went from being 1 of 8 in his toddler room to 1 of 28 in the preschool room and while there was a bit of an adjustment period he's handled it fine.

I've found at both daycares we've been at that when there's multiple rooms they combine a lot. With our first daycare there were 2 full rooms of kids at each age and they'd all start out in room, then mid morning split into two, then at the end of the day whoever was left would be back to being together in one room.

This happens at our current smaller daycare too. Even when DS was in the toddler room, when we got him at night all the remaining kids would be together in the preschool room.

So anyways, point being that your LO will likely have more social interaction than you think.

My son had this happen at his old daycare. For a while it was just him and his best buddy. I didn't worry about it too much because they always combined the classrooms in the mornings and the evenings so he was with a lot of other kids. It didn't last long though! He moved up a few months later.

I totally relate though. I found out 2 of my son's "friends" are moving to junior pre-school this week and I was bummed about it on his behalf.

@cityliving: I also get a little disappointed when my boys are the oldest in the classrooms, so I get it! Hopefully she gets some extra special attention from a great teacher and is more challenged at the new daycare when you move!!

@lilyann: Now that you've asked that I've realized more kids will likely graduate from infant to toddler soon. I typed this out right after the other mom texted with the update and I wasn't being very rational. It's unfortunate that she won't have any older kids to look up to but I can live with that for this teacher I think. Thank you!

@cityliving: Is it possible they will add more kids into her class before you all move in 4 months? I would like the special attention but would also agree that the social aspect isn't really there.

My daughter's daycare very recently opened up a second toddler room which she just graduated to along with two other babies from her infant class (the ratio is 1:5 and they would presumably eventually hire a second teacher and get more kids but they tend to take their time in finding the right teacher.) One of her infant teachers (who we absolutely adore) also made this transition with them. One of the other moms wasn't thrilled her child won't have older kids to look up to so they are switching her to the other room and they aren't switching anyone in in her place. That means my daughter will be just 1 of 2 in her toddler room. On the one hand, we are essentially getting a nanny share with the regulations of a daycare with a great teacher. On the other hand, we chose a daycare for the socialization aspect and I can't imagine she will get a lot out of the family styles meals with just 1 kids etc. One other thorn is that we are moving in 4 months so I'm not sure if it's worth introducing more change then necessary or making a fuss but I'm also a little miffed right now and am worried the move will be worse if she goes from a class of 2 to 10 later. Thoughts?
