I think I'm going to wean a good month or two before! I feel good just being able to say that I can go on the trip and honestly be free of having to do anything!

I would wean but as PPs have said, its very personal. My goal with both kids was to make 12 mos but to be done by 15 mos, but neither of my boys cared for nursing actually. So that's where I am coming from.

I would wean. We were considering an international trip with DS when he was 8 months and I EP so I was definitely going to switch to formula but we ended up canceling the trip. I'm considering weaning at 6 months however (pumping sucks) but I'm waiting to see how bad teething is (DS likes to comfort nurse on only one particular boob when he's upset) before drying up.

I would wean. When I got LO1 weaned around 14 months I was ready to be done. If you feel ready, you deserve to be done, guilt free. :)

This is so deeply personal. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. I've tossed the idea around before, on whether or not I would do it, and I'm torn. I don't think I could. I nursed DD1 until 19 months when she self weaned and it was so beautiful letting her go when she was ready, rather than me imposing it. Also, I don't think I personally could go on a long trip with a baby so young. I'd maybe do 2-3 days, and that wouldn't require weaning.

Good luck. Follow your gut!

After a year, yes. I am trying to do the same with my 12 month old, because DH and my 5 year anniversary is next month and we'd love to get away for longer than an overnight, but so far the weaning isn't quite working out...so I guess it just depends. I say yes, but at the same time, am having a hard time myself, actually doing it.

@Foodnerd81: I think this is good advice, OP- if you decide you do want to continue nursing you could always just pump once a day to relieve any pressure or maintain supply. If you use the trip as an opportunity to wean then you could probably just do a bit if hand expressing to keep yourself comfortable.

I had a 3 night trip and I used that opportunity to wean my 18 month old. Honestly though, you still have time to see what your BFing relationship looks like at that point because LO might wean herself by then!

I would make the decision closer to that time. If you are still loving nursing, I think you could make it easier on yourself to pump (like maybe just do it once a day in the morning to keep yourself comfortable). But if by 14 or 15 months you are starting to just feel done with it, you have a date in mind to be completely weaned by.

C is 18 months and has mostly been nursing just morning and at bedtime for a few months. I can skip the evening feeding and be fine and she just eats and has cows milk and is fine. But if I skip the evening, I definitely need to feed her (or pump) in the morning.

That said, I have a wedding in June wen c will be 22 months and I definitely plan to wean before then. The wedding isn't the only reason but it gives me an end date I guess.

100% would wean, but I've never been worried about making it to 12 months and have just weaned my son at 11 months, so my opinion is based in that.

I weaned my 2nd at about 15 months. I think I was down to 1 feeding a day. We were going on a 2 week driving trip and I felt like it was a good time to stop since he wasn't too interested in BFing. However, my word of caution is that you might consider stopping BFing/pumping a couple weeks before your trip. I thought that I would have no issues since I only had one feed a day, but I was wrong. I got horribly engorged for at least a week and a half. I was miserable. It only got better a day or two before we left.

I think it's a really personal decision. For me, I would probably pump morning and evening to be able to keep those nursing sessions. It's reqlly whatever works for you though!

At that age, yes, I probably would. I'm currently weaning C (12 months old now) because DH and I are trying to fit in a weekend away sometime before the end of March. Realistically, the absolute latest I would have nursed her was 15 months, and as we met our goal of 12 months, I'm not terribly fussed about weaning a few weeks earlier than we may have otherwise done. I'm also looking at it from the point of view that I need to do what is best for me sometimes - I have never been away from either of my girls for more than a few hours and I really need a weekend away. Pumping during that time, especially when DD2 is beyond the age that I consider BF'ing essential for my babies, is not something I'm willing to do, and therefore, the logical conclusion is to wean. Now if DD was under a year, I would absolute pump to keep our BF'ing relationship going for the remainder of her first year.

I did. We went on our first child-free getaway when LO was 14 months and I did not want to a lug a pump with me on the plane. It actually went really well. LO was down to only 2 nursing sessions by that point (morning and night), so it wasn't bad at all.

I am really interested to hear opinions on this because I am in the same predicament. I am going on a 6 day trip when baby is 14 months and really don't want to deal with pumping. I am planning to wean starting at 12 months, but am not sure how to go about it!

I will be going on a trip in July and will be away from LO for about 5 days. She will be 16 months old by then. I was initially planning on letting her self wean but the more I think about it I think lugging a pump around, trying to find somewhere to pump etc sounds like a pain. We will be out and about the entire day, every day.

What would you do? I'm trying to think of all possible considerations.
